(Sports Network) - With their playoff dreams almost over, the Florida Panthers begin a season-ending three-game road trip when they visit the Washington Capitals tonight at the Verizon Center.
The Panthers have 83 points on the year and have been all but officially eliminated from the postseason, as Montreal is holding onto the eighth and final seed in the Eastern Conference with 88 points. Both Florida and the Canadiens have just three games left in the regular season.
Florida is coming off Sunday's overtime loss to the visiting Carolina Hurricanes. Carolina rallied from two goals down late in the game to upend the Panthers, 4-3, at BankAtlantic Center. Ray Whitney scored 1:30 into the extra session to complete the comeback.
Jozef Stumpel had a pair of goals for Florida and Ed Belfour turned away 33 shots in defeat.
Olli Jokinen notched two assists to extend the longest current point streak in the NHL to eight games. The Finnish center has six goals and 11 assists during the tear.
