Hey Toronto ... Belfour's not washed up

SUNRISE,FLA. -- Eddie the Eagle is still flying high.
While many observers believed Florida goalie Ed Belfour was finished, he made his franchise-record 25th start for the Panthers last night against Ottawa.
And, while it's a long shot, the 41-year-old Belfour has given the Panthers a shot to make the NHL playoffs.
"I would think with the way he's playing right now, there's a chance he'll (play next year)," said Florida GM/coach Jacques Martin yesterday.
Belfour, who also held talks with the Detroit Red Wings after being let go by the Toronto Maple Leafs, has posted solid numbers after struggling with back problems early in the season.
He has started every game for the Panthers since Jan. 20 and went into last night 14-7-3 in his last 24.
BACK SURGERY
Not bad for a guy who had back surgery to alleviate the pain.
"Last year, obviously, wasn't a good year," Belfour told the Miami Herald recently. "People don't realize what guys are playing through. But that's part of being professional. I'm just happy I'm getting the opportunity here and staying healthy."
Martin said Belfour has had success because he works hard.
