If Ryan Smyth had his way, contract discussions would have taken a serious turn months ago and he could simply go about the business of playing his gritty game.
Instead, the Oilers sniper was fielding questions again on Sunday, a day after his four-point performance in a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings.
Has he talked to his agent? Is he anxious to know what the Oilers have offered? Is he hopeful it will get done -- and soon?
Smyth said he had not talked to his agent, Don Meehan, as of Sunday.
Oilers general manager Kevin Lowe confirmed on Saturday that the club has tabled an offer.
"I wish it would have happened earlier. This is what I didn't want to happen," Smyth said. "We're fighting for a playoff spot, and I think that's the most important thing in here. I don't want this to be an individual thing. We're focused on getting to the playoffs."
