If Edmonton were to continue like they are right now and fall out of playoff contention, as an Oiler fan, would you rather see them totally fall apart and get a really high draft position, maybe get in contention for Ovechkin??? Does it make a difference really if you come 9th or 15th in the Western Conference??? You still don't make the playoffs. I'm just asking this question because a good friend of mine is an Oiler fan and he wants them to stink it up and get a higher draft pick, because he thinks they won't make it regardless and even if they did, they would get their asses kicked by whomever they play in the first round!!!
This is exactly what the Cleveland Cavaliers did last year, so they would be able to draft Lebron James. I would rather make the po's and have a mediocer draft pick than finish near last in the west and have a great pick in '04.
Nobody is going to finish worse than Pittsburgh this season, that's a given. They'll have the first pick next summer no matter what. They'll probably have the 1st pick in 2005 too! (Crosby)
The Oilers and their fans are not going to through in the freakin' towel just because we're 4 points out of 8th place in the west. Heck, did you even check the standings before posting this question?
Today was the first day of winter for crying out loud!
There is still a lot of hockey left to be played, and I don't care how good Ovechkin is, I want the Oilers to do as good as possible. When I read this, I immediately thought of 1984, when Pittsburgh and New Jersey were fighting for the cellar spot in order to draft Lemieux. The Pens tanked many games on purpose in order to "win" the race. I do not want the Oilers to do the same thing.
Even if the Oilers don't make the playoffs (or later in the year they find no hope for them), I would still like them to play with tons of effort, quitting shows nothing. Also, draft picks mean nothing, even if you get a 'good' player out of it. You don't know how good a player that is drafted is, until he actually plays.
First thing is "No true Oil Fan will give up"..........Not until we're mathematically eliminated will I give up............Secondly we have alot of guys who may be on the move at the deadline or following the season......."ie" Smith, Horcoff(I think he's still unrestricted though), Ferguson, Cross , And possibly Smyth, Brewer and Salo.......
Perhaps Santa will be good to the Oilers this year and give them new and improved PP and PK special teams for the new year. Things could turn around and the Oil could end up in 4th or 5th in the Conference standings by the end of the year (yeah, I'm enternally optimistic! ). The current point situation isn't THAT bad contrary to popular belief.
I can't see the Oil "losing" just to garner better draft picks. They have some good picks coming their way through trades anyways.
I think, well, all of you are misconstrueing what I was trying to say. I'm not saying they should lose on purpose, but as an outsider, I can't see what good it will do to finish in 10 or something. Sure the Oilers aren't that far out from a playoff position, but you can't look at what you have seen all year and think they are going anywhere. I think in their best interests, they would be better to have a bad season and get a really good draft pick, and look forward to a new CBA system where hoepfully they can compete. I suppose if I were an Oiler fan, I wouldn't want it to be like that, but for the better of the team in the long run, especially after what Edmonton got in the Comrie deal, it would be more logical. Does it make you guys feel better that you have a mediocre team that every year has to dump its more expensive players because of salary restrictions??? That's how I see it!!!

Are you really serious when you say such things!?!?! ock:
You know the whole Oiler dynasty/history angle (and I don't need to get into specifics, but, what team IS considered the last dynasty? *duh*) and we're not talking about Minny or Columbus or Nashville...these are the OILERS!
1. Oiler fans are going to accept drawing down simply for the draft?
2. Of course it doesn't make us feel better than we aren't icing a more competetive team because of the frickin' CBA/owner situation.
We are still proud fans of our team and hey, at least we can draw back on some fond Cup memories when things get ****ty unlike some other fans and their Cupless teams... :P k:
