AT DETROIT
Oilers 1, Red Wings 7
(Oiler fan version)
In the first game between the Wings and Oilers, which was earlier this month, the Oilers fought back for a 4-4 tie. In this game, however, the Oilers went down without a fight ... all we took down with us were all the penalty minutes that we racked up, to our shame.
Wing Captain Steve Yzerman scored midway through the first period, and it already looked like it was going to be a long night for the Oilers. Especially if we're going to give up power-play goals. Darryl Bootland added another goal, his first career NHL goal, with less than 20 seconds remaining in the first period to make it 2-0. Once again, we gave up a goal late in a period ... that's one of the worst times to give up goals, because it gives the other team momentum going into a new period. So does being outshot 16-4.
It didn't end there, however. The Oilers took yet another ill-advised penalty and the Wings capitalized ... again. Brendan Shanahan wristed a shot past Conklin to give the Wings a 3-0 lead. Radek Dvorak narrowed the Wings' lead to 2 goals when he scored minutes after Shanahan's goal, a bizarre goal in which the puck bounced off of Wing goalie Manny Legace's glove ... but the Oilers just had to take another stupid penalty late in the period to hand the Wings another power play. To no surprise, the Wings scored again on a goal by Brett Hull with merely 6 seconds remaining in the period.
The Wings weren't finished yet. Kris Draper scored twice in this period, the first goal spelling the end of Conklin. He was replaced by Steve Valiquette. Steve Thomas then added a goal, the Wings' 7th, with less than 3 minutes remaining in the game. By that time, the game was mercifully drawing to a close.
There's a reason why the Oilers rank last in the league in penalty killing. It's because of a lack of discipline ... which often leads to the propensity to take bad penalties. Four of the seven goals that the Oilers allowed in this game were power play goals. Just WHAT were the Oilers thinking? Either we'd better improve our penalty killing big time or we'd better stay the heck out of the box! :x
The Wing fan version of this game recap can be found on the HockeyForums Wing board ... it's an entirely different recap of the same game.
