Watching the Oilers/Flames game last night, I noticed that the word Skyreach has left the building. Now in centre ice are just the team name, Edmonton Oilers. Has the place changed its name or what??? if it has, what is the name of the place now?
Anyways just wondering because I found it kind of odd.
Skyreach's contract has expired, and they won't renew because Skyreach Equipment is in bankruptcy protection. Rumour has it that the front runner for the new sponsor is Rexall (a pharmacy). Stay tuned.

Who really cares who sponsers it. I remember when skyreach took over I thought it was a wacked name, but now it sounds weird calling it anything else. They need someone to sponser the stadium so whatever they want to call it its fine with me... and whats wrong with a pharmacy? Skyreach was a construction company, and atleast everyone can make use of a pharmacy.

Ah, but now announcers will start giving the place some dumb-ass cutesy nick name, like "The Clinic" or some otherwise stupid title. That's almost as bad as revolving door names on the buildings.
I recall reading an article about Skyreach not renewing their naming rights several months ago (this past summer).

"That's the case. We'll have a new name," a source close to the situation confirmed yesterday. "There'll be an official announcement at some point, but nothing yet."
Skyreach Equipment owner and front-man Barry Weaver, who holds a stake of something in excess of $3.5 million as a member of the Oilers' ownership group, ponied up an additional $6 million or so for naming rights over the first five years of the deal.
Weaver's deadline to pick up the option came and went in July and was later extended, but, given the pending sale of Skyreach Equipment, Weaver has already informed the Oilers no extension is forthcoming. His deal ends in October.
As a matter of fact, Weaver is also expected to put his share in the club up for sale, somewhat reluctantly, effectively ending his corporate relationship with the Oilers.
While no deal is in place to sign a new company to naming rights, indications are the Oilers are talking to a number of corporations and that the terms being discussed would see a new name on the building for a period of 10 years.
Neither Oiler president Patrick LaForge or chairman and governor Cal Nichols would comment on the pending name change or any negotiations that are under way when contacted yesterday, but it's believed EPCOR and Telus are potential candidates.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to find out who is going to (if anyone) take over the naming rights to the Skyreach Centre/Northlands Coliseum. Building name rights contribute additional money into a team's general coffers. Here is a link with some naming rights, their value and duration...(you do the math)
