Jimmy Howard - Not New. Red Wings 2nd Round Draft Pick in 2003. Played college hockey at the University of Maine. Set unsurpassed single season and career records there, and single season records for the whole NHL, as well. Played pro since 2005 in Grand Rapids. Named to All-Rookie Team (05-06). Named to All-Star team (07-08). Projected as a No. 1 goalie.
Ty Conklin - Career Backup. Played for Edmonton, Columbus, Buffalo, then Pittsburgh, always as a backup. Challenged in Edmonton and Pittsburgh for starting position. Finished 2007-2008 season with the second best Save Percentage in the AHL a 0.920 [behind Chris Osgood]. Helped hold the bench down for Pittsburgh's Stanley Cup Playoff run last season.
Daniel Larsson - Not New. Wings 3rd Round Draft Pick in 2006. Played 2007-2008 season in Swedish Elite League. Named SEL Rookie of the year. Named SEL goalie of the year (like our Vezina award). Signed a 2-year contract with Detroit. Will likely be brought over to play in the AHL for Grand Rapids Griffins for 2008-2009. Should push Jimmy Howard for the starting spot, but adjustments to the North American game could slow him down in his first season. Projects as a future No. 1 goalie.
No one else will be signed by the Wings unless Conklin is lost on waivers following the pre-season. That is unlikely, but possible. There are other goalies in the pipeline but will likely not be a factor in the major North American Pro Leagues this year. These are Logan Koopmans, and Stefan Liv (I believe Detroit still possibly holds his rights in North America). There will be 6 goalies at training camp: Osgood, Conklin, Howard, Larsson, and Koopmans will likely be 5 of them. The 6th will either be a Grand Rapids Griffin try-out, or a free-agent tryout.
