throwing dead octopus on the ice.
I kind of have a problem with this tradition, catching animals just to throw them on the ice at Joe.
Why dont Detroit fans throw fake octopus like the Florida Panthers threw fake, not real, rats?
anyone else have a problem with this?

No, the animals were not caught just to be thrown on the ice.
The animals were caught to be eaten. They were bought to be thrown on the ice, two very different things. Your indignity should be felt for the poor starving people who were unable to eat an octopus on the night of a Red Wings game because some one bought the last one in the store before they got there. Now, all these little chilluns are running around Detroit with their daily serving of celaphod.
I think I would throw up in my mouth a little bit if either of the following occured:
A) Detroit fans threw a fake Octopus on the ice.
B) Detroit fans emulated Panthers "traditions" in any way. It'd be like finding out what superstitions the St. Louis Blues or San Jose Sharks have before their annual playoff collapse and then copying them.

I thought people caught octopus to throw them on the ice. My bad.
But still whether they caught them to throw on the ice or whether they got them in the store after they were caught, still seems like such a waste. Yes, i agree with you. would be better if the poor people could eat them. That wouldnt be a waste. But it reminds me of when i learned that people would kill a full elephant just for a ivory tusk and leave the rest to rot.....people will buy a whole octopus and then throw it out on the ice.
and I didnt mean for anyone to copy anyone else's tradition, just suggesting that the Panther one is more kind to animals (and people!). They dont use real animals. and they dont buy them so that there isnt any for the poor people to eat.
To tell the truth I wouldnt like for the wings to copy the Panthers, as the Wings have a great and long history, (with some dark moments but still) and the panthers don't.
btw i am not suggesting get rid of the octopus as your mascot or squash the tradition, because the 8 win run to the Stanley Cup was a great feat at the time for the Wings. It should be remembered imo.

Upset about real octopus being thrown on the ice? All I can really say is you're going to have to get over it, because it's a tradition that isn't going to quashed or watered down to fake ones being thrown on.

What makes me feel worst about this tradition is that there are starving children in the streets of Detroit crying cause they have no octopus to eat.
Hunting/fishing game is more of a waste then a dead octopus.
Plus how do we know that Stevie Y doesn't octopus for his pre-game meals? It would only explain why he is almost as good as Joe Sakic.

You could always start a new tradition in Montreal. Throw a dead horse on the ice. After all, you are beating a dead horse...."The dream is alive! 24 and counting!"
Rim shot please!

It really is a shame, isn't it. I mean, the economic and social impact that this "tradition" causes in an already depressed community is downright reprehensible. It reminds me of a similar situation in Nashville, where earlier in the playoffs 14 hill-billys from the same family were all arrested after rioting in the streets because "their catfish" dinner was thrown on the ice during a game!
The NHL commissioner really should investigate the impact of fan behavior on the economic well-being of a city's inhabitants and then issue a proclamation or regulation on team traditions.
Maybe its a topic for a different thread, but what do you think about the current problem with Graphite sticks and how many are used up in a season by the NHL? I'm worried about the number of graphite trees being destroyed each year in the Indonesia to make all these very weak sticks that break all the time....

The old tradition of winning often would be much better to revive. Pissing off the head office would be the cherry on the top of that sundae.
