Default Wings Close to Deal with Cleary

Apparently they have agreed on a term of 5 years, but they are still negotiating salary. Speculated that he could make 2.5-3mill a year, which I think would be well deserved, if not underpaying him for what he could potentially make on the open market, using Patrick Sharps deal as a comparative.

Also, they are trying to sign Lilja to a 2 year deal. Don't ask me why.

I'm not sure Cleary has proven he's worth the term. I'll agree to a 1-yr 3 million for Cleary, or a 5-yr 1.5 million, but I wouldn't commit the big money to a guy that hasn't stayed hot or stayed healthy.

I like Cleary and I think he's really valuable, but I don't think he's earned the long-term deal.

He is the top 6 forward that the Wings are desperately missing right now. He kills penalties, can play on the PP, and provides a tonne of energy. On the open market the guy could possibly get a 4-5 year deal at 4mill a year. I'd say it's best to give him the money, because it's not really that much, and show some confidence in his development with this teams system over the last 2 years.

I undervalued Cleary by a wide margin earlier this season.

He deserves his money. If its anywhere between $2-3.5 million a year, Im "okay" with it. Thats cheap for a 2nd line winger who brings his kind of game and scoring.

I disagree. I think Cleary is a role player. Albeit a VERY VALUABLE role player. He's got talent, and he provides something to this team that no one else does in terms of his attitude and grit, but I just don't see him as a top-echelon guy.

He should get a deal similar to Draper when Draper won the Selke and potted close to 30 goals (something Cleary still hasn't done).

If he wants 4 mil, I'll offer him that after a good playoff run, and I'll offer him 1-2 years max.

If he wants 4-5 years, I'll offer him that now around 2.5-3 mil.

Its one thing if Cleary has played 10 seasons in the NHL, the last 5 as 20-goal seasons. But he's played close to 10 seasons and doesn't have a whole lot to show for it. He still hasn't finished a season with more than 75 games played.

Signed a 5 year deal at 2.8/year. I'm thrilled with this deal, because I think he adds a lot to the Wings, and this is a great price. I think his defensive play alone makes him worth this much, which he should be able to at least maintain.

Glad to have him for 5 more.

The Home Town Discount in full effect.

2.8 is a number Cleary has earned. It looks like all sides knew there was more money out there. But he took less to stay with the Wings.

Time to go and get the Cleary Jersey...
