I think it's a good idea, there is no commitment to bring him up for sure, but he's available if we decide we need him.
This was also reported in the local Grand Rapids Press (which I can't access at work, so no link). Yzerman and Nill were in attendance last night, where Darren assisted on the tying goal and scored the game-winner of a 5-4 up and down game against a strong San Antonio team.
Darren again struggled in the third with his legs. He's got to get in better shape, but his skill is apparent.
I think its a great move by Holland who can bring in another savvy, veteran presence to the locker-room, a guy that can score and hit, and he's free (no trade to get him). Sign him, send him to GR on a 2-week stint...bring him to Detroit to get flexed for the Playoffs...perfect.
The Contract was offered, the contract was signed.
Detroit Free Press is reporting.
Deal believed to be 1-year contract worth $475,000 (US) annually plus incentives(not sure how the pro-ration works, but would guess its "per day" in the NHL based on regular season, which would yield about $115,000-$120,000).
Detroit, having signed him, has sent him to Grand Rapids for a 2-week conditioning stint in the AHL. After those 2 weeks, he will be recalled to Detroit (if not sooner, due to injuries) and will have about 2 weeks to "make the team" before the playoffs. He may finish the year as a healthy scratch, but I have a feeling the Wings will want to see if he can work, so expect a couple of games in late March at the very least. He will seemingly have to out-play the likes of Kopecky, Drake, and Downey to make the team.
By the way, there is a Home Game against Chicago on March 11, 2008, if you want to see a raucous ovation as DMac skates his first game as Wing since 2004.

This is great news, I'm really happy to see him back, even if he ends up adding almost nothing to the team.
Tonight is the night, according to the media, that McCarty makes his re-appearance in the Winged Wheel for Detroit. Home game against St. Louis, he will be fired up. He's not going to get 20 minutes of ice time, but he should be effective. He was slated for the 4th line at yesterday's practice (Drake, McCarty, Mark Hartigan). I think he would be more effective with Draper, but we'll let that slide for now.
I'm excited about the game but I do not expect that McCarty will be a big part of it. He hasn't played in an NHL game for nearly a year, you can't expect him to come right in and impress. I do think he'll find his stride and play with the grit we know he can play with by the time the playoffs role around. He'll be an improvement over Drake at any rate.
Who knew the comeback would have a chapter in the story called "playoff goals."
McCarty. Darren McCarty. Way to go, man.
Now just pound Tutu. Just once.
Not a pretty goal, but I loved it. I think he's going to be playing for the rest of the playoffs, but no more than 5-7 minutes a game. But I'm sure he's fine with it.
And Tutu won't fight it out with Mac... he'd rather find Hudler or Rafalski. Anyone else find it amusing that our 2 smallest players got roughing penalties last game?
