I don't really have very much dislike for the Avs lately. Maybe a good playoff series will change that.
Anyways, this year really hasn't done anything to clarify which player is better. Datsyuk has had a great offensive year, but without injuries, Zetterberg would be beating him. But thats the problem, Zetterbergs back is a huge concern. Can Detroit afford to sign him to a long-term contract for big money, considering the time he could potentially miss with this injury.
My gut says it'll be fine, that it will be something that keeps him out around 10 games a season. To me, thats not a big deal, and he'll still average 80-90 points/season, with probably a couple exceeding 100. He isn't a huge physical player, so it won't affect his play as much as it would a player like Holmstrom.
All that said though, I don't think you can give Zetterberg a bigger contract than Datsyuk. Give him 7 for 4 years, but if he wants longer term, it needs to go down to around 6.5. Especially considering that Datsyuk is finally being recognized by the outside world for his defensive prowess, and I think has upped it to a level equal to that of Zetterberg.
Man I love the Wings.
