Just in case people in Michigan arent searching for the league, but the teams themselves (understandable), this chart.

Google Trends: pistons, tigers, lions, red wings

Note: notice where the Red Wings interest peaked this past year? compare that to the other sports and you'd realize it took them going to the WCFs to even overtake thr MLB (spring training) and Pistons (out of the playoffs).

Its sad really.

Great stuff.

The Red Wings are not the #4 team IN Detroit in the past 10-15 seasons. No way, no how you can say the Tigers, Pistons or Lions have been more popular than the Red Wings during this time.

As for the lock-out. Use your head here.

Pre-lockout;Yzerman
Shanny
McCarty
Red Wings & Avs rivarly
Grimson
Lapointe
Kocur
3 Cups
Probert
Hull
Passion
Intensity
Fighting
Checking

Post lockout
Garbage penalty calls
No fighting
No fighters
Lack of checking
Zero Cups

To say the lock out caused it is wrong. If you think the Red Wings are an exciting team to watch, more power to you. If you want to blame the lock-out as to the reason why people don't come to games when there was a waiting list in the past--more power to you. If you want to blame the economy when the Tigers, Lions sell out--go for it. When Greektown is full on the Weekend, people in casinos and Van Halen sells out--go right ahead. If the Red Wings were exciting people would go to their games.

You want to turn this thread into who's more popular the Red Wings or Pistons go right ahead. In Hockeytown, I think the Red Wings are more popular but that doesn't come close to the topic of this thread and your inability to discuss the points made in my first response to you.

Do fans want to see puck possession passionless hockey or something else. I guess the crowd numbers answer that one.

Was the economy bad this summer when the Tigers had 3 million people come see them? Do the Lions deal with the same economy when they sell out almost every game every season even though they have been the worst franchise in all of sports? The Red Wings are boring so nobody comes to see them. This isn't that difficult to understand.
You are correct. Put a fighter on the Wings and Z will be even better. Put a fighter on the Wings and more people will come to the games. Fighting in hockey is exciting. Puck possession games are boring.Dallas Drake doesn't fit the role of a fighter just because he has three fights this season. I'm talking about a Downey, etc.

This just isn't brain surgery here guys.
Here you go--the actual topic of the thread. Not who's more popular but the Red Wings losing fans. Not who's #1 or #2 or #4 in Detroit. Not about the NBA.
Why have the Red Wings went from waiting list sellouts to 2/3 capacity with $9 tickets that can't be given away. Care to address the issue at hand?

Yes. The Lockout. It killed Red Wing hockey. Even people that had a passing interest in the sport latched onto something else. And "something else" covers two sports where each Detroit team is ultra-competitive and one sport is the real American pastime (the lowly Lions).

My opinion. I honestly believe we wouldnt be having this conversation if there was some form of mass transportation system in Detroit. I know why I dont go to games. Gas and distance of travel. I drink and there is no way I am driving from Detroit to my house after having 4-5 16oz beers. With traffic, thats at least an hour there and hour back.

OK The Lockout--Your opinion and of course I respect that.

My opinion:

The Wings are boring. Why? The nhl is boring. No fights. No physical play. Bull$hit penalty calls (Homer getting called in Calgary was it (?) without even touching the goalie, phanthom hooking calls, etc.,), playing the same 4 teams 8 times per year, not playing original 6 teams, seeing some teams only once every three years (Crosby, Malkin, Oveskin(sp?), no rivals, puck possession Eurohockey. All that adds up to Boring. My opinion.

Bettman and crew have changed the game for the worse.

Well, there is fighting in hockey still. The Wings have Downey and Drake this season, so we will see what they do. The schedule is getting changed next season, supposedly. It would be awesome if they changed the Wings to the Eastern Conference. But, would have to add 2 more expansion teams. We will see.

For Red Wings fans, I think that it is not just rules. Granted, the penalties are outrageous. The fighting isnt down, though. Even when we won the cup five years ago in 2002, we had no fighters. Hell, Dallas Drake had three fights in three games, and Lilja will throw them down occasionally, too. Fighting is down all around the league, not just in Hockeytown.

It is the combination of the gameplay and the schedule. Again, the overload of penalties detract from the game. But the schedule is just plain boring. We play Nashville, Columbus, and Chicago enough. They are so bland already. Patrick Kane and Rick Nash can be fun to watch, but I want to go to the games against the original 6 teams, and other Eastern conference teams like Ottawa and Pittsburgh. The East has so many superstars. If the schedule is cleaned up, the seats will fill up, mark my words.

The economy sucks... but that is a discussion I dont feel like getting into.

This is an interesting topic. I fully believe the economy in MI is definatly a factor. But how about the aweful schedule the Wings have. Think about it, Detroit fans have to see Chicago, St. Louis, Nashville and Colombus four times a year. No Sid Crosby and the penguins, No Ottawa and Alfredson. See what I am getting at? No Toronto (this was an awesome rivaly). Thanks Bettman, you goof.

PS don't even get me started as to why the Wings are in the Western Confrence.
