How can you consider McCarty any more of an enforcer than Drake or Downey? No difference at all. Shanahan was hardly a pure enforcer, he scored goals more than he fought. If you can find a player that brings the same thing as Shanahan does, that fits our cap, I would applaud you for it. As it is, those players cost a lot of money, and I do think that Franzen has some of that potential.
Shanny--I didnt go as far at to say Shanny was an enforcer. I said he enforced. Which, he did. Of course he wasnt on the team to fight. Point is, he took care of any business that needed to be taken care of.
Mac--There is a hugh difference between Mac and Drake. Mac is a HW, Drake is a MW at best. Hugh difference there. Downey is a HW but hasnt played.
Anyway, you asked about 02 and there it is. Nobody in 07-08 can handle what Shanny and Mac did. Dont tell me Drake can take on Godard, Brasher, etc

Uh, and we don't need to. Fighting is never a huge part of winning. And McCarty and Shanahan would be able to take on Boogard or Brashaer? Ok then.
Dingleberry does have one point, or at least might have a point. Attendance is down, not just because of the economy (see the Tigers rolling 3 million thru their gates this year), its the team.
Everyone wearing a letter speaks English as a second language. They grew up in Europe/Asia, not North America.
Losing Yzerman and Shannahan hurt this franchise, like it or not. I think Dingle is right about that. It certainly wouldnt hurt to have a North American with skill on our team (name one forward on the top two lines).
There isnt one, certainly not an elite one either. Shanny was/is elite, Iginla is elite, Lecavalier is elite (although from Quebec, you get the point).
I understand why that is, the Red Wings never draft in the first round usually, especially the past 15 years or so, which is when all the North American talent is picked (for obvious reasons).
But the Wings as an organization should consider the possibility of aquiring a big name, young(ish), north american talent. Attendance would increase.
I dont pretend to think THIS ALONE is the magic bullet, but I do think it is an issue. The other BIG issue was the lockout (cant fix that). We in the Detroit area are spoiled rotten with sports riches and there are 2 other teams to rally around if the NHL cant fix its mess (which is what the fans did).

I agree with Amorog that there aren't many who can take on Godard, Boogaard, or Brasher.
HOWEVER, put an enforcer on the Wings like a Godard and Torres is still looking for his teeth from that Williams hit last season.
It is only a matter of time before Z or D or Lidstrom gets "Williamsized" and then what?
Someone checks your top guys you go after one of there top guys and you have the muscle on the ice to back it up. That's hockey that I like. That fans like.

I agree 100%
While there are many good Euros in the league and on the Wings I'm just tired of watching them skate up and down the ice all game long. No hits, no fights, NO PASSION!!!!!
Is it just me, or did it look like there was a bit more people in attendance last night? Compared to Monday night, or last Wednesday against the Ducks.

I agree. Wasnt sold out, but it was definately more full. Actually heard a "Lets go Red Wings" chant, too.
