Default Goaltending next year

If it were me, I'd probably be inclined to go with Hasek for another year unless he retires. However, there are those who would like to see the Wings pursue a younger player with less injury risk. This from the Detroit Free Press: http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/a...28/1048/SPORTS

There may be some wisdom to this. If the Wings are in a position to be contenders for the next few seasons (and after this years performance, that would appear to be the case), it would be prudent to have a goaltender, like Giguere, who can reasonably be expected to continue playing beyond next year, and who isn't at a high-risk of injury. You can say that Hasek "proved his critics wrong" this year by staying healthy, but we all know that there's a risk there. Anyway, what do you guys think?

The Wings should try and retain him for next year, and then after that hand it over to Howard, depending on how he does in the minors. He had a shaky start at the beginning of the season with the Griffins, and was somewhat streaky from there, but if he performs as well as he has shown he can, one more year in the minors might just be enough. So, a band aid until Howard is ready is alright with me.

I like Hasek, but a lot of goals seem to come from him flopping around all the time on the ice and not getting back up. As a player that much be extremely frustrating to see your goalie out of position a lot and not a very good puck handler.

I don't know. He can play, give them a chance to win, but he flops around to much. Maybe he can get signed, give the other goalie more time, and come up. Hasek is getting old, he's going to have to retire eventually.

Hasek is still good, no matter his age. But we need to get our hands on someone like Giguere. He is young, and in my opinion better than Hasek. I dont think that Hasek, as good as he still is, is worth the risk.

the main thing is whether or not his teammates are willing to play for/with him and, according to kenny holland in today's detroit news, many players have expressed their desire for hasek to resign for another year.

would i like to have a younger, healthier goalie? sure, but we have that in either stefan liv or jimmy howard, both of whom are about a year from contributing. also, ozzie has proven to be a quality stopgap in case of injury.

plus, with the game on the line, do u want your chips with howard...or surefire HOFer dom hasek?

Howard I think is still a year away, as you seem to think, and Liv has signed in Europe, so its pretty much a guarantee that we have lost his services. Anyways, I have no problems with bringing Hasek back.

I do not like Hasek at all. Time for him to hang up the skates (again).

And who do you prefer over Hasek then? The fact that you say Hasek needs to retire, when his season and playoff numbers show otherwise, really shows that you don't understand him. He makes mistakes, but makes up for them by stopping other chances that other goaltenders wouldn't have a chance on. Detroit needs him back, there is no other better alternative.

Well I kdont think this is in the best interest of the Red wings winning the cup, but for the red wings as a franchise I think they should dump hasek and look for someone to share the start with howard. Maybe Osgood, maybe someone more promising like Garon, or you could bring in Abeister. Although they wont be as dependable as Hasek, Howard will then have the chance to grow into the starting postion and if he doesnt do it soon, he may idol to long a\nd never grow into a starter. He shows promise as a good number 1 guy, but he is going to need that opertunity and so most likely.
