Default Lidstrom New Red Wings Captain

Quote:
Nicklas Lidstrom will be the next captain of the Red Wings, replacing Steve Yzerman, the Free Press has learned.

But the team is holding off on a formal announcement, according to a person in the organization, to make a big splash before the season starts. Training camp opens Sept. 15 in Traverse City...

Good choice I guess, although I'm sure Holmstrom and Draper were considered.

I think theyll pick Chelios, just because hes alittle more respected in the league then
Lidstrom(not like Lids didnt win 4 straight norris trophies).

Wow, I was sure, and I mean absolute, that Detroit would've choosen Chelios as there new Captain. (But now I guess they're going for someone who is actually younger, and not 87 years old :haha

I can see Lidstrom being pick as the new captain over Chelios for the following reasons:

1. Chelios is on the verge of retirement and father time will be eventually catching up with him.
2. Chelios is a great leader and very well respected, you can't take that from him, but I think the Wings are looking for long serving captain.
3. Lidstrom is considered the best defenseman in the game, can lead his team through thick and thin, and is always consistant.
4. Lidstrom is quite younger than Chelios therefore he will most likely be around in Detroit much longer than Chelios, unless he signs with a new team or is traded.

Agreed. I would've though Maybe Draper. But Lids is a good choice too!

Lidstrom will do a fine job as captain. Kudos.

Simply, Chelios was captain of the Blackhawks.

Im being serious when I say that fact alone precludes him from ever wearing the 'C' in Detroit.

your silly if you didnt see that one coming.... lidstrom had it before Yzerman even made his retirement public knowledge... Like some of you had said.. Chelios is another good choice but he's gettin old.. a solid club needs to have a long standing captain.. not a revolving door where he is changed every few years due to the previous captains retirement.
