Giving this to Lindstrom says to me that the team doesn't want to sell the fans a youth movement. When Yzerman got the C, the team sucked. They needed someone to be the face of the team, in order to sell tickets. At that point they were selling his face and everyone knew the team would still be garbage for awhile. Today, Lindstrom as the C shows the fans the team is still focused on this season.

If thats the case, then name me the Captain of a Cup winning team that was under the age of 25? I'm sure there is one, but not in the last ten seasons I believe.

Detroit has a bunch of new kids, and the same core group of veterans. I think many are expected another 19 season long Captain in Zetterburg. Its not going to happen. Lidstrom is the next best thing to being the leader on this team with Yzerman retured.

Take Vinny Lecailver. Given the C way to early in his career, and the end result? Yes a Cup win, but not as Vinny as the Captain.

I'm sure Zetterburg will be the Captain of the Wings in a few seasons. Lidstrom has about 2 years left to go and after that, it will be time to change again and Zetterburg will be ready for the C.

Off the top of my head, I can't name one that was under 25 but I am not saying it can't happen. A guy with the talent and age of a Crosby maybe in his 6th or 7th year by his 25th birthday and I wouldn't be that shocked then. What I am saying though, is usually when you give such a young player that mark, you are doing so because they team is trying to sell tickets. Since usually those type of talented player go right at the top of the draft, and you get to that point by losing a lot of games. You take that young star, give him the letter and the team, and use that to build not only your team but fanbase around.

Good points!

When Detroit named Yzerman the Captain they needed to sell tickets and show that the team is looking to go in a new direction.

Today, Detroit is not looking to bring in a fan base, they already have it. I think for the next two season, we are going to see a "lets finished what we started" team with Draper, Maltby, Osgood, Lidstrom, Schinds, and Chelly finihsing their careers. By then, we will have a good read on Zetts and Dats, plus the current prop of youngster coming up. There is the next gen of the Wings, its just a couple of seasons away yet.

I think that Lidstrom will bring a quiet, "lead by example" type of leadership, similar to Steve Yzerman. I think that Lidstrom is a great, and obvious, choice to wear the C in the Motor City,

To say that it was the obvious choice is a stretch, I really thought that there was a chance that Zetterberg could get it, or even Draper. But I must say that after thinking about it for awhile, I've become more content with the decision.
