Babcock has said this announcement was made premature, the Toronto Sun was reporting the team is considering letting Henrik Zetterberg take the C to give the team a new face, for the long term.
So does this guarantee that Detriot won't win the Cup next year?
Nothing is a guarantee Liam, nothing.
Anyway, can't say I'm disappointed, but can't say I'm happy either. Nick is a great guy, but not, in my mind, the right guy for the captaincy. You all talk like Nick is 25, when, in reality, he could retire at the end of his current contract. Thats only 2 years. Not very long, and not much longer than Chelios would serve for.
Personally, I was hoping that Zetterberg would get the C. Only because he is younger and would give the team a new and younger face, and perhaps signify the Red Wings move towards developing a younger, faster team, which I hope is in the plans for the near future (although resigning Hasek would seem to be a step back from this plan). Detroit needs some better young leadership, and I think Hank would be the person to step into that role, if not as a Captain, then I would hope at least as a alternate.
Anyway, it would appear that nothing is set in stone, and we'll see how everything turns out in the end.
Im being serious when I say that fact alone precludes him from ever wearing the 'C' in Detroit.
i don't know about that. if it were still the 80's, i'd be inclined to agree with you. but if bryan trottier can coach the rangers, i'd say anything is possible.
Zetterberg was also another choice. The list of the guys that had a chance at getting it were Lidstrom, Zetterberg, Draper, and Chelios. Probably in that order. It wouldn't have been a bad choice to hand it down to Zetterberg, but Lidstrom will do a tremendous job.

I would have given it to Drapes before Zetterberg. Don't get me wrong I love Zetterberg, probably one of my favourite younger guys in the league, but I wouldn't want to see his game fall just for wearing the 'C' too early.
He's all but assured the captaincy as long as he stays a Wing so why rush it?
Lidstrom is a great choice though. Give Zetterbeg an 'A' though.
You make it sound like this was a big deal. The captain is largely an honorary position with no real duties other than to argue uselessly with the ref when a call goes against the team.
Some clubs think so poorly of the captaincy that they rotate it through the season.
If the position has some meaning other than as a way to honor long serving team members then I'd say Lidstrom is not a good choice. You need some excitement, some personality in the captain and Lidstrom has neither of those.

And on some teams the Captain is more than just an honorary positon. Yzerman, Sudin, Sakic, and Modano for example, are more than just someone to argue with the ref. Its old school, were these players are respected for the work and leadership they provide. Were would Detroit, Leafs, Avs and Stars be without their leaders?
I think Lidstrom will do fine. He is as quiet as Yzerman was, is highly respected. I would have liked to see Zetterburg, but I'm sure thats because Wing fans are looking for another 20 season Captain.
