The Detroit Red Wings hope to make a final decision on the fate of head coach Dave Lewis by the end of next week.
According to the Detroit News, general manager Ken Holland has spoken briefly with owner Mike Ilitch regarding the future direction of the team but still has some player exit interviews to complete before the two meet again.
Lewis, along with assistants Barry Smith and Joe Kocur do not currently have contracts for next season.
The newspaper reports that the Red Wings have not tried to contact any of the current crop of unemployed coaches, which includes Joel Quenneville, Paul Maurice and Jacques Martin. The latter is expected to be named head coach of the Florida Panthers on Wednesday.
Holland will also have to make a decision on whether or not the Red Wings will pick up forward Brendan Shanahan's $6.5-million option by June 25 or he will become an unrestricted free agent.
Holland met for three hours with Shanahan recently and has also spoken with free agent defenceman Chris Chelios.
holland i know just got back from vacation. but as a said before i dont think lewis is the problem i think that if the wings will make any coaching changes it will be with assistant coach joey kocur (offesive coach). everyone in hockeytown loves him but he got the job primarily because of his history with the team. lewis has a lot of history with the players and the orginzation which shows on the ice.

Yeah me either, Lewis's Redwings were first in the whole entire league, and they lost in the second round to the eventual stanley cup finalists, hes not Scotty Bowmen, but hes a decent coach, I think they should keep him.

Regardless, I don't think they will (keep him, that is). For one, the Hockeyotwn faithfull want to blame someone for this latest shortcoming in the postseason, and sicne Cujo's goaltneding was superb, they can't point the figner at him. So what do they do, of course, they balme the coach. If they were to make a head coaching change, it would make it look like to some fans that they are trying to go into the right direction perhaps. But that is a bit of a farfetched reason to let someone go. But the main reason I beleive he could be axed, is the way that Holland talked at a meeting with the press after their exit of the playoffs, in whihc he said something to the effect of, "We have had to great regualr seasons. But, also, we are judged by our postseason performance." It kind of amde it sound to me like he might get let go. I think it also depends on who is availiable for head coaching posititions. My take on it: Sign him for one more year, and see if he can do anything with this team, if not, than maybe it's time for a change.
Holland I don't think will make any wholesale changes with regards to coaching. Holland is not a panic type GM, when things go wrong everything needs to be changed. Keep the coaching staff intact, hey we did finish 1st overall in the regular season, they must be doing something right. Our problem was the same as it was vs the Ducks last year, not enough goals. Goaltending is NOT the problem, we need a couple of Draper like players and another young goalscorer. I think that some of the kids from GR deserve a look as well, we've got some good building blocks sprinkled with our core vets. There's no need to panic.
I want to throw this one out there for the fellow RW fans: if Holland thought he could get him for not too much, would you like to see Fedorov back in the red & white? He stated last season if things were different in his personal life, he would still be there. I would love to see him back as I think we really missed him in the playoffs. He's always been a great playoff performer and is very versatile as well.

ha i think i would rather have patrick roy on the team. you will meet the ocasional wings fan who says that they still respect the guy but as far as im concern he lost that when he disrespected the wings orginization. going behind the illitchs back to sign with another team. im fine with guys who leave the wings but he did it for all the wrong reasons he left because he wasnt the center of attention. he got what he wanted hes now a star player only its on a 12th placed team as opposed to 1st.
I agree with CHet on this one. If you don't want to play in Hockeytown, than get the heck out! Total sell-out! Another mentionable sell out is Vaclav Prospal, that youngin' that played for the Bolts last season and had a pretty good year. He too went to the Ducks. I think those 2 got what they deserve.
That's the feeling I get from alot of fellow Red Wing fans about Fedorov. The way he went about things was wrong I agree and signing with the Ducks just made no sense from a career standpoint. From a hockey standpoint, he would have helped us out this year in the playoffs alot I think. You guys are right in that he did want to be the #1 guy, had he waited another year or even this year he would have been our #1 guy. But he made his choice and now has to live with it.
BTW: Chet, saying you'd rather have Pat Roy on the team is almost treason in my books. Honestly, I think I would have cheered for someone else if that egotistical p**ck became a Red Wing during his career. I see the point you were making however, I'm sure you didn't mean that k: !!!!

that just shows you how much more i dont want fedorov on the team. i dont know any wings fan in the right mind who would want to see roy as the netminder but even more so i wouldnt want to see fedorov on the roester.
The worst part was that he went to Anaheim for the same amount of money we orgionally offered him. Plus, we had just lost to the Ducks, making it seem like his philosophy was, "Can't beat 'em gotta join 'em, I guess..."
