The Red Wings took their biggest potential unrestricted free agent off the market on Saturday, re-signing all-world defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom to a two-year contract extension worth nearly $20 million.
Lidstrom, the Red Wings' highest-salaried player, has won the last three Norris Trophies and was the 2002 Conn Smythe winner as playoff MVP.
Lidstrom joins fellow swede Tomas Holmstrom to re-sign with the club in the last 24 hours. The team is also working on deals for Kris Draper and defenseman Mathieu Schneider, though it appears those deals won't be completed before GM Ken Holland's self-imposed Saturday deadline.
Holland following up signing Holmstrom with another in the backbone of our defense. Well worth the money and a sign that Lidstrom is quite happy in Detroit and Management is willing to do what it takes to get guys re-signed and with not alot of fuss. Great job again Holland
