every single player is either really good or all-star...Detroit is buying the stanley cup for about 80 million dollars. Detroit is what's wrong with the NHL (along with Colorado/Toronto/St. Louis/Dallas and other teams who just buy their way into the playoffs) Who cares if one of those players get hurt...

Noticed you're from Ladner. Must be upset that the Red Wings, with a depleted line-up, beat the Canucks 3-1. Anyway, I'm tired of hearing about how Detroit buys their way to the Cup. Remember the core of the team (Yzerman, Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Draper, McCarty, Fischer, etc...) are draft picks of Detroit, these guys are and will be the heart of the team for years to come. They have added to their line-up players via smart trades (Shannahan, Lang, Maltby, Schneider, Chelios, Wolley, etc...) or free agent signings that have worked out well for Holland (Hull, Hatcher, Legace, Mowers, Whitney, Rivers, etc...). Ken Holland continues to show he is a great GM and he has the green light from Mr. Illitch to go out and make deals or make intelligent draft picks in order to stay true to his comittment to the fans of the Red Wings of icing the best team possible to win.
If Detroit only buys their way to win, why have they unearthed so many gems in the later rounds of the draft that other teams have overlooked:
-Datsyuk: 171st overall '99
-Lidstrom:53rd overall '89
-Zetterberg: 210th overall '99
-Holmstrom: 257th overall '94
-Dandenault: 49th overall '94
Detroit has a great scouting staff on hand and credit should go to them to find these guys and recongnize their potential that other teams may have missed. Some of these guys are key members of the Red Wings.
As well, drafting Yzerman 4th overall in the '83 draft was by far one of the biggest steals in NHL history. What Yzerman has meant to this franchise cannot be put into words. He is the greatest Red Wing of all time. I believe Lou Nanne (someone can correct me if I'm wrong) said it best one time when asked who he would have taken if he were to do it all over again: Lawton or Lafontaine? His reply: "Neither, I'd have taken Yzerman."
