Oilers @ Wings, Nov. 26 (Wing fan version)
November 26, 2003
AT DETROIT
Oilers 1, Red Wings 7
(Wing fan version)
When the Wings and Oilers last met up, the Wings had a lead and a chance to win the game and blew it. With the way the Wings played recently against the Washington Capitals, we weren't going to let that happen again.
Wing Captain Steve Yzerman, who played in his 1400th game, started the Wings' onslaught midway through the first period, in which we outshot the Oilers 16-4, when he whacked the puck in behind Oiler goalie Ty Conklin for a power-play goal. Don't tell Yzerman he's too old! Darryl Bootland later knocked in a backhander to score his 1st career NHL goal with 18 seconds remaining in the period.
The Wings were just getting warmed up. At 2:03 of the second period and with the Wings on another power play, Brendan Shanahan flicked in a wicked wrister from the left faceoff circle to make it 3-0 Wings. Radek Dvorak then put the Oilers on the board less than two minutes later when it flopped off of Wing goalie Manny Legace's mitt and into the net behind him. However, Brett Hull found a loose puck at the left faceoff circle with less than 10 seconds remaining in the second period and sent it in to give the Wings a 3-goal lead again. Once again, this goal was on the power play.
Kris Draper then scored two of the Wings' 3 remaining goals in this game in the third period. One of those came at 6:07 of the third period. Conklin was then replaced by Steve Valiquette in the Oiler net. Draper scored the other goal about ten minutes later, and Steve Thomas finally put this game away with a goal at the 2:19 mark.
The Wings' power play was 0-for-9 in the last three games previous to this one. It was nice for us to not only get our power play going again, but also to keep attacking once we get a lead instead of sitting back.
The Oiler fan version of this game recap can be found on the HockeyForums Oiler board.
