Cujo wins minor-league start for AHL Rapids
Joseph may play another game with the Griffins before returning to Detroit.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -- Detroit Red Wings goalie Curtis Joseph made 20 saves in his first minor-league hockey game in eight seasons, a rehabilitation start for Grand Rapids of the AHL.
Playing his first game since the Red Wings were swept in the playoffs last April, Joseph looked sharp in helping the Griffins beat Utah 4-1.
The $8 million-a-year goalie, who had surgery Aug. 19 to remove bone chips from his right ankle, was assigned by the Red Wings to their American Hockey League affiliate on Monday for conditioning and rehabilitation. The Wings have looked to trade Joseph since six-time Vezina Trophy winner Dominik Hasek came out of his one-year retirement.
Red Wings goalie coach Jim Bedard was impressed with Joseph's effort.
"I thought he was great," Bedard said. "The thing I noticed was his movement overall was exactly what I thought it would be. Since he hadn't played a game in six months or so, I thought he passed with flying colours."
Joseph may play another game with the Griffins before returning to Detroit.
A crowd of 8,031 -- about 2,800 less than a sellout -- cheered Joseph, who ranks No. 9 in NHL career wins with 380. The Griffins were expecting about 5,200 fans for their second home game before it was announced on Tuesday that Joseph would be their goalie.
Joseph is expected to meet with Red Wings officials over the weekend to discuss the next step in his rehabilitation.
His last minor-league game was for Las Vegas of the International Hockey League during the 1995-96 season.
