In his prime, few players could get under opponents' skin like Kirk Maltby. His ability to aggravate, coupled with his exceptional penalty-killing skills and decent offensive contributions (12-to-14 goals a season) made him one of the Wings' most underrated players during their championship years.
His style made him reviled around the league, but he was also gaining recognition prior to the lockout as a valuable role player for international competitions, playing for Canada in the World Championships and being named to the 2004 World Cup team (he didn't appear in any games).
