Franchise players were becoming harder to find until the cap came into place, with Sakic and Yzerman being the usual names coming up in that gategory.
Maybe the tag will make a comeback 'cause I don't see Crosby or Ovechkin going anywhere anytime soon, but then again (come on, say it with me everyone) -
"even Wayne Gretzky was traded".
It seems that this is the trend right now yes, but I don't know how long it can last. The cap is not going to keep going up, unless the NHL can keep revenues going up, so I'm not sure that teams can continue to make these kinds of commitments to big name players while at the same time committing to winning the Stanley Cup. Having one or two superstars on a team does not ensure you winning the cup. You have to have a solid team all around, and I think that some teams, namely the Rangers and Penguins, are going to have a hard time in a couple years retaining all the young talent that they have.
Z is a better all around player than D. It only stands to reason that he'd get the better contract, no?
Z has been mentioned time and time again as getting the C. It only stands to reason that he'd get the better contract, no?
Dude, just stop talking in the third person.
And who says Z is a better all around player than Datsyuk? I think that they are very similar players, with Datsyuk have a slight edge in offense where Zetts is probably better defensively. The fact that Zetterberg is the prospective captain does not guarantee him a longer contract, though I agree he will most likely make similar money per year.
I think Henrik will be 27 or 28 when he enters negotiation next summer.
I would give him a 6-7 year deal for $6 million a year, no problem. Couple of killer bonuses for performance and playoff success, too.
Hank Z is pretty close to a perfect player. Right after Hank signed, I would offer Datsyuk the same money and term. A little over 1/5 of your payroll in 2 elite players is very, VERY reasonable. Lets just say Howard is the next Brodeur or that the Wings have a chance at a Luongo-type free agent in the future. Add another $6-7 million, and only 1/3 of your cap is used in locking up 3 superstars (2 centers and an elite goalie?! sick...). Hell to the yeah.
Tampa Bay screwed up when they decided to keep 3 skaters instead of 2 skaters and a goalie. If TB had signed The Wall instead of say....StLouis, they wouldnt be getting the flack they are right now because they would still be contending.

Zetterberg at $6-7 would be a steal, given the deals that Drury and Gomez earned this season. I think he gets a little more money than Datsyuk's 6.7/year, so probably around 7, but I don't know about the term. I would love for Detroit to offer him a 7 year contract like Datsyuk, but I don't know what the plan is.
And Howard being the next Brodeur? We can only hope the Wings give him the chance to prove this. He played exceptionally well this preseason, so its definitely possible, but he needs to carry that into the season with the Griffins and prove that he can be consistent. Even then, Detroit isn't a team thats too prone to giving rookies a chance, especially goaltenders. But who knows, the entire Wings brass seems to be impressed with him lately.

Z is better than D. Better backchecker, forechecker, better PK, better in the neutral zone, better in the corners, better along the boards.

D is better with the puck clearly.
It isn't as black and white as you make it seem. Datsyuk may not be recognized in the same way as Zetterberg is in those aspects, but by watching games I notice that Datsyuk is better at those things than most give him credit for. In a couple years people will recognize this. For now, I'm just happy both are on this Red Wings team, giving us 2 of the top two-way players in the league.

I'm talking right now, Z is better than D.
D isnt recognized in the same way as Z because Z is better than D thus more $$$$$.

That comment pegs you as a casual fan. Just because a player isn't recognized in the same way as another, it does not mean that they aren't just as good. Watching a couple games makes it easy to recognize that Datsyuk deserves the recognition, he just isn't getting it yet.

It really makes no difference to me if you call me Umpa lumpa. Z is a better all around player than D. Most would agree. Execpt you.
