The Detroit Red Wings confirmed Wednesday goalie Dominik Hasek will return for another season this fall.
The 42-year-old netminder arrived at the decision this week after taking three weeks to talk over his future with his family.
“He wants to come back and play another year,” Wings general manager Ken Holland said. “In the next few days, between now and the draft, we’re going to work on his contract.
“He wants to play for the Red Wings, we want him back. It’s a matter of negotiating a contract that’s fair for both sides.”
Holland hasn’t discussed any salary numbers with Hasek’s agent Ritch Winter, but he expects a deal to come together quickly. He hopes to have a deal finished before the NHL draft June 22.
“I have no idea what it’s going to take,” Holland said.
“This year, playing for a base salary of $750,000 US, he was willing to take all the financial risk. Based upon my conversations with Dom and Ritch Winter, I believe Dom wants to be here because it’s all about winning.
“With Dom, it’s always been about winning.”
After failing to complete his previous two seasons because of injury, the six-time Vezina Trophy winner posted a 38-11-6 record in 56 regular-season games. He was among the league leaders with a 2.05 goals-against average, had eight shutouts and a .913 save percentage.
Hasek started all 18 games for the Wings in the playoffs helping Detroit to the Western Conference final for the first time since 2002.
“Physically I felt great this season,” Hasek said. “Also the desire and passion for the game is there. I enjoy the competition.
“This is something I know won’t be missing next season.”
