Default Western Conference contenders will battle tonight in Dallas

(Sports Network) - A pair of Western Conference contenders will battle tonight at Dallas' American Airlines Center, where the Detroit Red Wings will try to put their recent road troubles behind them when they take on the Stars.

Detroit has been dominant at home this season, posting a splendid 21-3-3 record in the Motor City thus far and is currently riding a 12-game win streak at Joe Louis Arena. The Red Wings haven't had nearly the same success in enemy arenas as of late, as the club has dropped five of its last seven as the visitor. Detroit is 15-13-3 as the guest this year.

The Wings come in off an embarrassing 6-1 road defeat at the hands of Philadelphia, owners of the league's worst record, on Monday. The Flyers erupted for five goals in the final 16 minutes to break open a close contest.

Tomas Holmstrom had the lone goal for the Red Wings, who missed out on a chance to take over first place in the Central Division from Nashville. The Predators currently lead the NHL with 79 points, one better than Detroit.

Joey MacDonald surrendered all six goals on 33 shots for the Red Wings. The rookie netminder was making his third consecutive start while veterans Dominik Hasek and Chris Osgood continue to fight through injuries.

Hasek, who is hampered by a right wrist injury, is questionable to return for this evening's contest, while Osgood is sidelined indefinitely with a broken finger.

Dallas will be playing the fourth test of a five-game homestand tonight. The Stars have won each of the first three contests on the swing and produced their highest scoring output of the season in Sunday's 7-5 victory over Colorado.
