Stars hold onto Lehtinen, Hagman and trade for Mike Green
Quote:
The Dallas Stars on Wednesday exercised the club option on two-time All-Star right wing Jere Lehtinen for the 2006-07 season and re-signed left wing Niklas Hagman to a two-year deal.
They also traded a conditional draft pick in 2008 to the New York Rangers for prospect Mike Green. Green had 17 goals and 26 assists in 50 games with the Hannover Scorpions of the German Elite League last season.
Lehtinen, 32, recorded a career-high 33 goals, including 14 on the power play, and 19 assists this past season. He appeared in the Olympics for the fourth time last February, helping Finland win the silver medal.
A three-time Selke Award winner as the league's top defensive forward, Lehtinen has scored 20 or more goals six times in his 10 years with the Stars.
"Over his 10 seasons, Jere Lehtinen has demonstrated his worth to this organization with consistency and hard work," Stars general manager Doug Armstrong said. "He leads his teammates through his work ethic on the ice and we are glad to have him secured for next season."
Hagman, 26, was acquired by the Stars from the Florida Panthers last December. He had six goals and nine assists in 54 games with Dallas.
Hagman scored two goals in the Stars' 4-1 win at Colorado in Game Four of the Western Conference quarterfinals. He also played for Finland in the Olympics last February.
"Nicklas Hagman proved that he fits in well with our hockey club with his grittiness and strong penalty killing," Armstrong said. "We believe that he will only continue to develop as a solid player in this league."
The Stars on Wednesday also acquired center Mike Green from the New York Rangers for a conditional draft pick in 2008 and then signed him to a one-year contract.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
Green, 26, spent the 2005-06 season playing for Hannover in the German Elite League, tallying 17 goals and 26 assists with 11 penalty minutes in 50 games.
In 2003-04, Green appeared in 24 games with the Panthers and Rangers and recorded one goal and three assists.
