The Dallas Stars have re-signed two key players, center Jason Arnott and defenceman Jon Klemm, the team announced on Thursday.
Arnott signed a one-year contract, while Klemm inked a two-year contract with a club option for a third year. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deals were disclosed.
"Jason was a solid player for us last season last season and we look forward to having him as part of our team again next year," said general manager Doug Armstrong.
"Jon provided stability and leadership to our hockey club last season at an important time and we are pleased to have him back."
Arnott, 29, appeared in 73 games with Dallas last season, registering 21 goals and 36 assists for 57 points with a +23 rating. The 6-4, 220-pound center ranked first on the team in plus/minus, first in assists, second in points, second in game-winners (5) and fourth in goals. Finishing just two assists shy of tying his career-high of 38 assists set in 1996-97 while with Edmonton, Arnott also posted his sixth-straight 20-goal season.
Over his two-plus seasons with the Stars, Arnott has tallied 47 goals and 61 assists for 108 points with 123 penalty minutes in 155 contests. A 20-goal scorer eight times over his career, Arnott notched a career-high 33 goals and 68 points during the 1993-94 season with Edmonton. In 743 career NHL games, he has collected 244 goals and 324 assists for 568 points with 897 penalty minutes.
A first round draft choice (seventh overall) by the Oilers in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft, Arnott was a member of the 2000 New Jersey Devils Stanley Cup championship team, recording the series-clinching goal in Game Six of the Cup Finals at Dallas in the second overtime. He was acquired by Dallas from New Jersey on March 19, 2002 with Randy McKay and a 2002 first round pick in exchange for Joe Nieuwendyk and Jamie Langenbrunner.
Klemm, 34, played in 58 games with the Stars this past season, tallying two goals and four assists for six points after posting one assist in 19 games with the Chicago Blackhawks. The Cranbrook, British Columbia native finished fourth on the Stars in plus/minus (+16). He missed the entire 2004 playoffs with a groin injury.
The 6-2, 200-pound defenseman was acquired with a fourth round pick in 2004 from Chicago in exchange for Stephane Robidas and a second round pick in 2004 on Nov. 17, 2003.
A veteran of 637 career NHL games, Klemm has registered 37 goals and 91 assists for 128 points with 342 penalty minutes over his nine-year career. Serving as a an alternate captain with the Chicago Blackhawks from 2001-2003, Klemm recorded his best offensive season in 2002-2003 when he tallied 42 points (12-30-42) in 65 games.
Prior to signing as a free agent with Chicago, he appeared in parts of three seasons with the Quebec Nordiques from 1991-1995. When Quebec relocated to Colorado, Klemm appeared in six full seasons with the Colorado Avalanche from 1995-2001, winning two Stanley Cups with the Avalanche in 1996 and in 2001.
