Dallas Stars goaltender Marty Turco has been suspended four games for his stick infraction in Wednesday night's game against the Edmonton Oilers.
Turco forfeits $195,121.96 US in salary based on the fact he's a repeated offender. He was banned one game last season for a high stick on Colorado Avalanche centre Peter Forsberg.
Turco willl sit out Saturday at Vancouver, Sunday at San Jose, next Wednesday at home against the Oilers and April 2 at Minnesota, returning for the club's last regular-season game April 4 at home against Chicago.
In the first period, Turco struck Ryan Smyth in the mouth , earning him a double-minor high sticking penalty. Smyth was bleeding from the cut and sent to the dressing room for repairs.
''I didn't hit Smytty in the face on purpose,'' Turco said following the game. ''It was an accident. That's all I'm going to say about that.''
Veteran backup Ron Tugnutt is expected to handle the load while Turco is out.
ya, we need some stars fans in here, same with a lot of the team, i posted a blawkhawk rant in that forum a few days ago and there hasnt even been 1 response, please look at it timmy and respond !! :(
bad news for the stars even though they are gareenteed a playoff postion the worst thing that you can do is have a goalie go into the playoffs after missing four games.
Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong, who got the call from Colin Campbell, said the team would take their medicine and face up to Turco's actions on Wednesday.
"It was a stick to the face, I don't think there is any denying that," Armstrong said. "We accept it and move forward. Hopefully for Marty and the entire organization we can use this as a stepping-stone when the playoffs approach. The intensity is going to rise, the physical contact is going to increase and we have to use this to remember that we have to keep our composure at all times.
"In the playoffs, any slip up in composure can cost you a game and, ultimately, a series."
Armstrong certainly did not try to sidestep the high-stick, the four-minute double minor assessed to Turco or the suspension handed out by the league, which will also cost Turco $195,121.96 in forfeited salary.
