DALLAS (CP) - The Dallas Stars, who are off to a slow start this season, acquired veteran defenceman Jon Klemm from the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday.
The Stars also received a fourth-round draft pick in 2004 in exchange for 26-year-old defenceman Stephane Robidas and a second-round pick in 2004.
Dallas was looking for defensive help after starting the season 7-9-2-0 and giving up 50 goals in 18 games, among the worst defensive records in the Western Conference.
Klemm, 33, was plus-6 with an assist in 19 games with the Blackhawks this season. The nine-year NHL veteran is known as a defensive blue-liner and was a career-best plus-26 with Colorado in 1999-2000. The 6-2, 200-pound Klemm has 35 goals, 87 assists and 318 penalty minutes in 579 career games.
"Jon Klemm is a veteran player who we feel will help solidify our defensive corps," Stars GM Doug Armstrong said in a statement. "He has strong leadership qualities and adds size and determination to our team."
The Hawks, meanwhile, save some money in the deal with Klemm earning $2.5 million US this season compared to Robidas's $727,500 salary.
Robidas, 26, had one goal and a minus-2 rating in 14 games with Dallas this season. He played his first two seasons in Montreal before joining the Stars in October 2002.

Good move for Dallas. He adds depth to a team. Could have looked good on Montreal, or back in his home province, on the Canucks.
