Default Stars sign Turco

Found this on the TSN website,

Quote:
Stars lock up Turco

9/18/2003

The Dallas Stars have locked up their No. 1 netminder from last season, signing Marty Turco to a three-year contract.

Turco rejected the team's latest offer last week and it appeared that there would be no quick resolution to the stalemate between the two parties. General manager Doug Armstrong said the Stars offered Turco a three-year deal worth $12-million which owner Tom Hicks indicated was the club's final offer.

The offer was an improvement over the one-year, $3.5 million offer originally submitted to Turco. The netminder was said to be seeking a multi-year deal worth $4.5-million a season.

The restricted free agent earned $850,000 US last season.

Turco is coming off a year which saw him record the lowest goals against average since World War II, 1.72, and lead the league in save percentage at .932.
The value of the contract has not been disclosed yet and I could not find it on either TSN or Sportsnet.

I'm glad the Stars owners stuck to their guns and didn't open up the vault and sign Turco for Theodore money.

Now that he has had a substantial raise it would be a real bummer if Turco stunk up the arena this year like Theodore did last year....

Yeah, that would really hurt my feelings....NOT!!!!

Just found the revised story on TSN, the additional part is,

Quote:
The Dallas Stars have locked up their No. 1 netminder from last season, signing Marty Turco to a three-year contract worth $12 million.

Turco will earn $3.5 million this season, $4 million next season and $4.5 million for the 2005-2006 campaign.

He also gets playoff bonuses that would see him earn an additional $500,000 US if the Stars reach the Stanley Cup Final
Averages out to $4 million per year. Wish the playoff bonuses were explained more. Could be increments of $ 125 thousand per round?

Surprising that the Stars played hardball with Turco after opening the bank for every other player signed over the past few years.

I can understand where Turco and his agent were coming from. If Giguere gets an average of $4.875 million per year, why shouldn't Turco get the same or more. Turco's stats are better and he has had a more immediate impact than Giguere, who had has steadily improved over his career. Sure Giguere was outstanding last spring but one season does not prove he can maintain that high level.

way way way over paid. why would the stars give up so easy and pay him? he still has quite alot to prove imo, and its not like he was going anywhere. if he didnt play this year, and maybe with a potential stike next year, that would be 2 yrs without pay. hed have to give in eventually. and if you look around the league, not many teams actually need a goalie. the ball was in the stars court and i think they dropped the ball on this one. especially after failing to get rid of guerins huge contract.

i agree, they shoulda stepped up and payed the man what he wanted in the first place. last year, sharks' goalie evgeni nabokov was a no-show at training camp, and they went from first, to last. let's just hope that doesnt happen to the stars, cause someone has to bring down those avs and wings!!!

Keep in mind, the Sharks also had Stuart unsigned at the time and they had tuned out Daryl Sutter the previous spring. I don't think Tippet has any issues with his team that I've heard of.

We knew that he would be signed sooner or later, and I am sure both the Stars and Turco woulda perfered to be with the team as soon as possible. 4 mill a year is a littly steep for a player who only has one real season, but he played really well last season and if hes only going to improve from here. Whose really suprised that the Stars gave him the contract that he did? They have the money and they know that they need Turco.
