Default Pacific: Stars' goal for 2007-08: More goals

Doug Ward | NHL.com correspondent
May 22, 2007, 12:00 PM EDT

Dallas Stars General Manager cuts right to the chase when he looks back on the 2006-07 season.

“We didn’t get enough goals this year,” Armstrong said, addressing the elephant that had its own cubicle in the Stars’ locker room all year long.

After Dallas scored just 2.65 goals per game during the regular season (21st in the NHL), adding offensive punch will top Armstrong’s summer shopping list.

“In the middle of the year,” Armstrong said, “when we had a lot of injuries, scoring was at a premium, and we were hoping to get goals from different sources, and it didn’t come.”

Adding offense depth without destroying his club’s defensive mindset will be Armstrong’s biggest off-season challenge. Dallas captain Brenden Morrow, for one, believes the Stars don’t need to add a pure-goal scorer as much as they need to complement their current lineup with a couple of conscientious players who can fit into the team’s system, while also grinding out the occasional timely goal.

See here? This is the commitment to winning that I've been talking about.

The GM think that he sees a problem, and he'll make no secret about whether or not it is a concern to him.

There is a lot to sort out come October but I believe the right desissions will be made to fix the problem.

The sad thing is some changes will need to be made to solve the problem that means trades or losing some players to free agency in order to get bigger guns to sign to Dallas.

All in all it will be an interesting summer to say the least.
