Default Blue Jackets goalie coach brings expertise to hockey camp

Perry Elderbroom’s two-decade path from his Vancouver Island-based Gold in the Net goaltending schools to the National Hockey League rarely moved in a straight line.

So going from the NHL playoffs to Burnaby this summer is an expected detour.

There have been stops in Finland, where he helped spark the goaltending revolution now on display throughout the NHL, and in Sweden, where the lasting impression includes New York Rangers’ star Henrik Lundqvist still owning the Gold in the Net franchise.

There were also North American students moving through the ranks of junior and college and minor-league hockey to the NHL. This year, after almost 30 years working with goalies of all ages all over the world, Elderbroom made it to the NHL himself as goalie coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets, playing a key role in the breakout of Vezina- and Calder-Trophy candidacy of rookie Steve Mason, and a long-overdue playoff run.
