Indeed Saucey, Garon was the #2 on my wishlist, now #1 I suppose. Of course, it stands to reason that the Kings will do what the have to in order to keep their only winning goalie under contract...but then again, it is the Kings. Knowing Crawford's man-love for Cloutier they won't give Garon the starting job, so hopefully he'll hold out for free agency. Unfortunetly it's a sellers market this summer for goalies, and if the Avs can't get a guy like Garon then they'll be in line to shell out $6 million for Giguere or trade away God-knows-who for Fernandez. My biggest nightmare is Colorado buying out Theodore only to turn around and see that Cujo and Esche are the only goalies left on the shelf...

Re: The Now-Official Offseason
Either of them would beat Theodore anyday. A high school team goalie would beat Theodore. o_O
It stinks that Backstrom got snagged, but I guess it was never really likely that the Wild would let him go. Even so, the Avs still have some good options. I just hope those options are still around when free agency opens, and that the Avs' management's smart enough to make the good choices. *cough* Dump Theo *cough*

I second the motion. Too bad we can't trade Theo back to the Habs for Abby again. He was much better in our system than Theo ever has been or will be.

Re: The Now-Official Offseason
I really don't mind that we didn't get Backstrom. He is a young goalie, and will definatley a starter. We have Budaj, we don't need another up and coming star. One will sit on the Bench half the year, and it won't be good for either goalie.

Whoa no, we don't want to go down that road again. I think Aebi's better than Theo, but definitely not by much. ^^;;

Jeikobu, that is something that is going to aggravate you, and many other Avs Fans.
The worst part is he is "confident". I don't want to see this guy back. Like honestly, he was a waste of cap. Why does he even want to come back? He'll likely be riding the bench, or maybe even the press box

Re: The Now-Official Offseason
I leave for a week of vacation, and this is all the activity in my absence? For shame. First, allow me to update some numbers:
Laperriere's option: 1.064
Parker: .475 (somehow the Avs signed him for less than last season, not that I'm complaining)
McCormick: .475
Guite: .475
Boychuk: .475
Of those, McCormick and Boychuk's contracts are 2-way, meaning they don't count towards the cap if neither make it out of training camp, which I don't think they will. Thus Colorado's bottom six looks something as such:
FA-Richardson-Laperriere
FA-Guite-Parker
And the total team's payroll for next season rises to $31.2 million. Toss Hensick and maybe Stewart in the mix, and Colorado still needs to sign a top-six forward and two bottom-six forwards, and probably two bottom-pairing defensemen (or top-pairing, depending on how one looks at it).
-------------
Some new ideas I've come up with:
-I've been the most vocal supporter of bringing in a 30-40 game goalie to play with Budaj, and while I still stand behind that, I've been thinking more and more about launching into another season with a Budaj/Theo tandem. I came to the conclusion that if Budaj can accept immediatly starting 30 games and then next season starting 50 games, adding another 10-15 to his plate probably wouldn't cause a trainwreck. Also, assuming his save % improves to roughly .910, over the course of sixty games with Budaj and 20 with Theodore (assuming, as I do, Theodore's performance continues its lackluster pace), computes to the team over 82 games allowing 20 fewer goals, which would most likely be enough to improve on the previous 95 points and 9th "playoff" spot. Ergo, while I still push for a Garon signing, I won't be as heartbroken as I may have been in the recent past.
-As indicated above, I think FG will sign two 5-6 defensemen (hopefully Vaananen and Klee, seeing as how they're cheap, effective, and already know the system), mostly because Sauer and Finger don't really seem ready for a full season. But with $10 million in cap space, perhaps the thinking on that is backwards, and that two top-pairing defensemen should be brought in and push everyone else down the depth chart. This would lead me onto multiple tangents/rants involving cap space, time on ice, and Vaananen taking godawful penalties in the last 5 minutes of games, so I'll leave it at that.
-Believe this or not, I had halfway hoped the Avs would pick up Samsonov when/if the Canadiens bought him out. The reasoning behind it is complex -- and now that Chicago traded for him, totally irrelevant -- so I'll just end by saying Bruno and Sakic still need a better RW to play with than Wolski.
-Speaking of RWers, Svatos just seems to have less and less of a place on the team next season. Considering that the only player he ever clicked with (Turgeon) won't be coming back, and that he really can't play anywhere effectively except the second line where Hejduk is cemented, I think, for better or worse, he's pretty much trade bait. Which teams need speedy finesse 20-30 goal scorers, and what can they trade back?
--------------------
That's all for now. The draft is in approximately 144 hours, and I plan to be present flying the team colors, having tickets for the absolute worst seats in all of Nationwide Arena. As they were free, however, I will not look the aforementioned gift horse in the mouth. Stay tuned and watch the madness unfold...

We're going to bring in someone to back up Budaj. We have to. We can't just start out the season knowing we're giving up 10 to 20 games when we have to start Theodore to rest Budjs.

Re: The Now-Official Offseason
Oh, and I believe there will be another huge blockbuster trade for us this draft year again. Hopefully, it will not be a player I love, so that I break half the objects in my room and have a really crappy whole week.

And hopefully, the player we recieve will play more than a third of the season so he cant actually make an impact. I'll give Leopold another year to make an impact before I start my angry letters.
Im not all that opposed to trading Svatos with Theodore if that needs to be the case. Anything to get Theodore out of here.
