Default University of Calgary's Jarrett Lukin suspended two years after positive test

CALGARY (CP) - University of Calgary Dinos hockey player Jarrett Lukin has been assessed a two-year suspension after a positive test for cocaine metabolites, the team said Friday.

The sample was from an unannounced in-competition doping control last November conducted by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES), the team said. Cocaine metabolite is a prohibited substance that carries with it a two-year period of ineligibility.

Lukin, 23, appealed the sanction last week but the university was advised that no mitigating factors were offered. On Friday, Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) and the CCES confirmed the appeal was unsuccessful and that the two-year suspension would be issued.

"Our first concern is the health and safety of our student-athletes," said athletics director Don Wilson. "Following the positive test we provided counselling and support for Mr. Lukin while he filed an appeal with the CCES and completed his courses and exams last semester.

"However, the University of Calgary is unequivocally opposed to the use of banned substances and accepts the sanction against Mr. Lukin."

The school, which was not sanctioned, provisionally suspended Lukin from participating with the men's hockey team on Nov. 28, within 24 hours of being advised of the findings of his doping control.

Lukin has since left the school and signed with the Florida Everblades of the ECHL. There was no immediate word on whether the Everblades would honour the suspension.

Prior to joining the Dinos, the five-foot-11 185-pound centre played five seasons in the Western Hockey League. The Fort McMurray, Alta., native played four full seasons with Kamloops and split the 2004-'05 season between the Blazers and Medicine Hat Tigers.

In 312 WHL games, he recorded 86 goals and 126 assists for 212 points.

Default

Seems crazy that it took several months to suspend following a positive drug test.
