Hawks want Calder signed
TheFourthPeriod.com

The Blackhawks would like to sign Kyle Calder to a long-term contract, but the winger may have other plans, reports the Chicago Daily Herald.
According to the paper, it's believed Calder wants a one-year deal in order to test the free-agent market next summer.

Calder has filed for arbitration, seeking a raise from the $1.3 million he made in 2005-06 when he led the Hawks in goals (26) and points (59).

Meanwhile, winger Radim Vrbata is believed to be close to a new deal with the Hawks.

I would like them to sign him to a long term contract too. He was one of the very few bright spots on the forward lines last season.

Sounds like Calder wants out of Chicago. Smart man. If he played on any other team he'd be getting 80 pts instead of the 60 he had last year.

Agreed. I would over pay this guy. He seems to have alot of potential if he plays with some decent players once in a while.

When restricted free agents cannot get the salary they desire from their team, they are allowed to file for arbitration. The arbiter then decides on a players salary, the must pay at least 80% of the arbitrated salary to keep the player. If they refuse to pay, the contract rights are invalid, and the player is pretty much a UFA.
