Mired in a three-game losing streak, the Blackhawks appear to be another season away from the playoffs, reports the Chicago Tribune.
The team's focus is now on how general manager Dale Tallon revamps the roster in the salary-cap age.
Averaging less than three goals per game, the Tribune suggests the Blackhawks' need for more offense is critical.
The San Jose Sharks and New York Islanders are also rumored to be interested in bolstering their offense.
"We're not looking for a band-aid," he said. "We're looking for someone who is going to fit in long term with what we want to do and blend in with our young guys."
Meanwhile, Tallon said he had no idea whether winger Eric Daze would ever play again.
Daze, 30, has been one of Chicago's best offensive producers since joining the team full-time in 1995-96, but has been battling through a history of back ailments.
In 601 career NHL games, the Montreal native has notched 226 goals and 172 assists for 398 points.
