(CP) - Cam Barker has made the jump from junior hockey to the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks.
Barker, 19, a six-foot-three defenceman, was Chicago's first draft pick and third overall last year when he was with the WHL's Medicine Hat Tigers. Other rookies on the Blackhawks' roster for the regular-season opener at home Wednesday against Anaheim include three who played for the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL last year: defenceman Duncan Keith, left-winger Rene Bourque and centre Matt Ellison.
Chicago got down to the 23-man roster limit Tuesday by trading goaltender Michael Leighton to Buffalo for forward Milan Bartovic and assigning Bartovic, Shawn Thornton and Jason Morgan to the Admirals. Leighton had been edged out by Craig Anderson for the backup job behind Nikolai Khabibulin.
Defenceman Adrian Aucoin was named captain of the Blackhawks.
