ruuttu fined 1,000 dollars
The National Hockey League has reportedly fined Chicago Blackhawks forward Tuomo Ruuttu $1,000 following Thursday's altercation against the San Jose Sharks.
Sparks began to fly 40 seconds into the game when Ruutu left his feet to deliver a glass-rattling check from behind on rookie Tom Preissing. Preissing needed assistance from the ice and did not return.
Ruutu was not penalized for the hit, but the Sharks were angered enough to take the matter to the league.
Late in the second period, Ruutu took a run at Todd Harvey in front of the penalty boxes. But when Harvey dropped his gloves to engage Ruutu in a fight, the Sharks' forward was tagged with an instigator penalty, giving Chicago a power play and taking Harvey off the ice for 17 minutes.
As time expired in the game, Chicago's physical fourth-line forward Ryan VandenBussche threw a vicious elbow into Harvey's face. VandenBussche only got a charging minor.
