Premier Gary Doer today inducted Jonathan Toews into Manitoba's Order of the Buffalo Hunt in recognition of his outstanding achievements in winning two gold medals with Team Canada in the 2007 world junior and world men's hockey championships.
"As Canada Day approaches, it is fitting to honour Jonathan Toews, not just as a rising young hockey star, but a Manitoban who is an excellent ambassador for our province and our country," said Doer. "I know he will continue to make us proud and represent us well on future Canadian teams and during his National Hockey League career."
Toews was drafted third overall in the 2006 NHL entry draft by Chicago. In May, the 19 year old signed a three-year contract with the Blackhawks.
In 2006 and 2007, Toews played for Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships where, earlier this year, he led the team in scoring in its third straight gold-medal performance. Then, as the second-youngest player on Team Canada at the World Men's Hockey Championships, he became the first Canadian to win both a world junior and world men's championship in the same year.
