Carolina Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford is involved in serious trade discussions in hopes of bolstering his blueline, reports the Raleigh News & Observer.
Reports surfaced yesterday at the draft that the Hurricanes were speaking to the Philadelphia Flyers about Joni Pitkanen. One rumor floating around the draft suggested a third team (Edmonton) was involved, and that Canes forward Erik Cole was on the block. Rutherford denied that report, while Oilers GM joked that if Cole was available, he'd pick up the phone.
Rutherford did openly admit he was looking for a defenseman, but said that things are brewing.
"We've got something going on right now," Rutherford told the News & Observer. "It's kind of a time-frame thing whether it's going to happen or not. We're working on maybe changing up the mix of our defense. That might be a possibility."
Speaking from Columbus late last night, TFP Editor-in-Chief David Pagnotta said a deal could be worked on this coming week.
