Default Flames trade for Bouwmeester

Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter traded Jordan Leopold and the #67 pick to the Florida Panthers for Jay Bowmeester.

Just for the rights!

Bad move Sutter!

I think its a good move. Sutter will get him signed. And even if for some reason he can't all we lose is the #67 pick. Leopold wasn't going to be back anyways

Agreed, I got a good feeling they'll be able to sign him anyways.

The question is: once bouwmeester is signed what will happen to Phaneuf? It would be great if they could keep him, I don't think they'll have the cap space to do so. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out, it might help the situation that the cap went up slightly.

Weather they keep Phaneuf or not this is a good move since there's extra player value in the system. I think it's funny how Sutter said yesterday how he didn't plan to make any major changes then the next day he makes 2 trades.

Dion will stay, I'm sure of it. Sutter Probably wants the big 3 there. You can tell Sutter is gonna get it done. He is already clearing room for the signing. Vandermeer is gone, were getting Prust back.

They could let Adrian go, that would free up much of the $$$ we need.

Aucoin is already off the books. He isn't counting against any cap space. We could free up $1.5 mil by getting rid of Primeau.

How is trading the rights to Leopold and a 3rd for the rights to Bouwmeester a bad move?

This is a brilliant trade.

Leopold is going to be a UFA and wasn't going to be brought back into the Flames fold, and the Flames traded the pick they got from trading down in the first round. The Flames still got their man in the first round and potentially flipped the second pick they got for Bouwmeester.

If Bouwmeester signs, the deal is essentially a 3rd round pick for him, since the Flames weren't losing an asset in Leopold. If he doesn't sign, then the Flames only lose a 3rd round pick. That's well worth the chance to negotiate and sign a young stud defenseman.

Aucoin is a pending UFA as well. He's not currently signed to the Flames for next season, and if he does, he won't be getting the $4M that he got prior seasons. There's already cap space available.

Also, the Flames moved Vandermeer and brought in Prust, which freed up another $1.5M.

They could easily sign Bouwmeester, allow Pardy to develop into more of a top four defenseman over the next year and then trade Sarich at the end of the year. Same could be done to Langkow if the Flames forwards develop into players that could easily replace him.

Remember, the Flames wanted to get younger. Bouwmeester helps.

If the Flames lock up Bouwmeester (let's say for the same price as Phaneuf), then their line up could easily look like this, assuming they can re-sign certain players to quality contracts.

Bourque (1.35) - Jokinen (5.2) - Iginla (7)
Moss (1.3) - Langkow (4.5) - Bertuzzi (1.5)
Glencross (1.2) - Conroy (1.05) - Greentree (0.65)
Nystrom (0.688) - Boyd (1.1) - Backlund (1.271)
Ex: Prust (0.5), random fighter (0.5)

Bouwmeester (6.5) - Phaneuf (6.5)
Sarich (3.6) - Regehr (4)
Pardy (1) - Giordano (0.892)
Ex: Pelech (0.85)

Kiprusoff (5.833)
McElhinney (0.535)

$56.169M total. Leaves the team with little wiggle room, but if Sutter feels that Sarich or Langkow could be moved without hurting the team, then that would free up a fair chunk of cap.

Well according to http://nhlnumbers.com/overview.php?team=CGY&season=0910 they have just enough money this year to sign a contract of this size. This coming years cap is 56.8 I believe I read. They're at 47 now...so I think Daryl will be just fine. And this team will be sic. Somehow I trust he will make it work.

I don't think they can afford Bert and 1.5m, they need wiggle room so they can dress more than 12 guys in Games 80-82 this year. I see a guy like David Van Der Gulik or Brett Sutter getting a good long look. Moving Primeau and his 1.5 cap hit is crucial too.

I was just tossing Bertuzzi in there at 1.5M to fill out the roster. That could be any guy with a 1.5M cap hit. Hell, it could be Backlund or Boyd too.

According to Eklund, Bouwmeester's signed with Calgary for a cap hit of $6.3M. No word on length. Again, this is Eklund, so take it for what it's worth.
