Report: Campbell puts off contract talks
TSN.ca Staff
1/15/2008 11:49:45 AM
The Buffalo Sabres might be facing the prospect of losing defenceman Brian Campbell as a free agent at the end of the season.
According to the Buffalo News, the All-Star announced on Monday that he is done negotiating a new contract with the Sabres until the end of the season.
FULL STORY
Well here they go again, if it goes past the end of the season, Campbell will probably see what is offered in free agency. Buffalo can ill afford to lose him, he is the future on their blue line.

The Sabres ought to bail on him and get what they can before he bails on them and leaves them with nothing.
Why would he stick around anyway? They had a 2 year stretch where they were contenders, but those days are gone and I am sure he wants to be in a position to win and not on a team struggling to make the playoffs.

This puts the Sabres in a bind, because if they think that he's going to bail on them, then they may as well rent him out to a playoff contender and get a few draft picks for him. Better that then nothing.

From and ESPN article on the top 25 players who COULD be on the move:
Quote:
Brian Campbell, Buffalo Sabres (unrestricted free agent)
The plot thickens in Buffalo, or sickens if you're a Sabres fan. Campbell won't talk contract with the Sabres until after the season. The team will be life-and-death to make the playoffs and GM Darcy Regier can hardly afford to let another key piece of his franchise take a powder without getting something in return. And Campbell, an All-Star and strong candidate for the 2010 Canadian Olympic team, is the best defenseman who could be available on the market. The New York Rangers need help defensively, as do the Sharks.

Bad sign when you start to see this in national media. It gives the player more reason to "test the waters" of free agency. If they lose him, and the Sabres do not make the playoffs, there could be a fan revolt in Buffalo.

That guy is on his way out, not a doubt in my mind about it. He's done in Buffalo.

I like Campbell, and I hope they find a way to sign him. I think he is on his way out, but they just interviewed Darcy last night and the talks are back on with his agent, so that is a positive sign. I could see Briere getting him to Phily!

One of two things will probably happen soon.
1)If talks are back on, they need to extend his contract NOW.
2)He will get traded so that they don't get stuck at the end of the season, and get nothing for him when he goes free agent.
The Sabres organization does not want a repeat of last seasons fiasco with Briere and Drury.
As for him going to the Flyers, interesting because they really need to upgrade from the human pilon(hatcher) but I don't know if they have the money to spend. Especially if they get Forsberg.
