Default The Sabres/Amerks affiliation over

Quote:
After 29 years the marriage between the Rochester Americans and Buffalo Sabres is over, the NHL team says, but in some ways it's actually a surprise the partnership has lasted this long.
In the spring of 2001, Amerks president Steve Donner was on the verge of signing a five-year affiliation agreement with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Well that's it over. Rochester were perfect for the Sabres; It didn't cost much to get players to and from each team, it let them move up quickly to Buffalo, and was also easier for Lindy to keep an eye on the players progress. It still sucks big time, even though i think we all knew it was going to happen.

Who will we begin our new partnership with? Portland? Hershey?

Not many AHL teams will be interested in the Sabres when they openly state that they just want a development team to go fishing at, which i doubt teams will like when they want to win the Calder Cup too.

I honestly didnt know the AHL and NHL worked like that. I thought NHL team were just assigned affiliate teams I didnt know they had to sign contracts like that. Now that im aware of this that does suck big time for Buffalo.

Being from Rochester, this is really sad. The Sabres and the Amerks have had a really wonderful relationship for many years, which was a two way street. There has been alot of critism of Steve Donner(Amerks Owner) on his finances, which hasn't helped. But in general, having an AHL affiliation that close did nothing but help. The Amerks have played games in Buffalo(and almost sold out HSBC) and the Sabres have come here. There is such a great history here with the Sabres, it will be very sad to see it go.

Interesting segment on the Classic pregame on local NBC in regards to the Amerks situation. The Sabres have actually made an offer to outright buy the amerks. This has not been well known here in rochester(first that I heard it).

The big problem has been the local ownership(steve donner) wants the Sabres to pick up some of the cost of veteran players on the Amerks. But the Sabres want a developemental team for younger players, and believe that it is up to the Amerks to fund the players.

If the Sabres were to outright BUY the Amerks, don't know if that would change. But on thing that has come out recently is that the management of the Amerks has been having financial problems, and selling the team may be an option that they need.
