Parts one and two are up, hopefully you've read them. Not that you have to though. You know, whatever.

Right Wing Chase Polacek – Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute
20-years-old, 5’8”, 165lbs

2009-10 Stats: 39GP, 26G, 26A, 52Pts, 40PIM

Only Polacek’s size holds him back. He is a very dynamic offensive player, and his shot is deadly anywhere from the circles in. His skating is fantastic, and he has the ability to elude defending players and slip into open ice to get to loose pucks first. He has instincts that simply can not be taught when he’s in the offensive zone. He has great hands and an amazing release.

Due to his size, he can be overpowered and doesn’t win many battles for the puck. He also isn’t that great in the defensive zone.

Center Matt Read – Bemidji State University
23-years-old, 5’11”, 190lbs

2009-10 Stats: 36GP, 19G, 21A, 40Pts, 32PIM

Read is a solid all-around center. He doesn’t have the vision that other players in this series might have, but he is still able to put up the points. I think the best comparison would be to Tyler Bozak.

Right Wing Calle Ridderwall – University of Notre Dame
21-years-old, 5’11”, 185lbs

2009-10 Stats: 38GP, 18G, 9A, 27Pts, 51PIM

Don’t let his numbers this year fool you; he is primarily a pass-first player. He has the ability to provide fantastic saucer passes and touch passes. His top speed isn’t that much, but he has the ability to change up his rate of acceleration, which can cause problems for players that are trying to read him. He has soft hands and excellent timing in the offensive zone.

While he’s added strength since he was draft eligible, he could still be considered weak at times. Because of this, he uses his foot speed and skating ability to fight through checks. His defensive game could use some work as well.

He has good bloodlines as well, his uncle is Rolf Ridderwall, a Swedish goaltender who played in the Olympics. His brother is Stefan Ridderwall, a goaltending prospect for the New York Islanders, currently playing for Djurgården.

Right Wing Mike Testwuide – Colorado College
23-years-old, 6’3”, 220 lbs

SIGNED WITH FLYERS

2009-10 Stats: 36GP, 21G, 10A, 31Pts, 26PIM

Testwuide has the size and skill to play professional hockey right now, but the question is in what situation. He can play physically, defensively, and offensively. He doesn’t have the vision in the offensive zone, which could limit his productivity at the NHL level.

His shot and ability to put the puck in the back of the net is very impressive though. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him put in front of the net and attempting to deflect pucks in the NHL, simply because of his size.

Honorable Mentions:

Left Wing Blair Riley – Ferris State University
24-years-old, 6’0, 220lbs

Forward Jacques Lamoureaux – Air Force Academy
23-years-old, 6’1”, 182lbs

Right Wing Cam MacIntyre* – Princeton University
24-years-old, 6’1”, 220lbs

*Rumor has it that MacIntyre has signed a contract with the San Jose Sharks, but it hasn’t been officially announced yet. Nor are there any actual details.

Right Wing Justin Fontaine – University of Minnesota-Duluth
22-years-old, 5’10”, 161lbs

Defenseman Dan Ringwald – Rochester Institute of Technology
23-years-old, 6’1”, 185lbs

Hopefully you've enjoyed reading part one, even though it's not necessary. Here's part two.

Center Stephane Da Costa – Merrimack College
20-years-old, 5’11”, 180lbs

2009-10 Stats: 34GP, 16G, 29A, 45Pts, 41PIM

Da Costa is a dynamic player that, likely was never drafted because of where he’s from. Since he’s from France and only started to play in the USHL at the age of 18, it creates a picture of why he was passed over.

He had a fantastic start to the year at Merrimack and practically all of the team’s offense has gone through him. His on-ice vision in the offensive zone and his passing ability are off-the-charts when compared to other NCAA players. He is fantastic when he’s coming in on a defenseman 1-on-1 and has a snap shot that is just behind Phil Kessel’s in his release. Unbelievably creative in the offensive zone.

On the other hand, he is still rather weak and could stand to get stronger. As well, his defensive game isn’t much to talk about, but his offensive skill and hockey sense are things that can’t be taught.

Defenseman Erik Gustafsson – Northern Michigan University
21-years-old, 5’11”, 190lbs

2009-10 Stats: 36GP, 3G, 27A, 30Pts, 24PIM

Gustafsson is probably the best puck-moving defenseman that’s considered a College Free Agent. He’s aggressive and quarterbacks the powerplay with his puck distribution skills. Great skater who is quick and agile and is able to make breakout passes.

He is undersized for a defenseman and often loses in 1-on-1 situations against opponents larger than him, but is able to compete defensively because of his skating ability.

He won the CCHA Best Offensive Defenseman award last season, as well as being named to the CCHA First All-Star, both feats are expected to be repeated this season.

Forward James Marcou – University of Massachusetts Amherst
22-years-old, 5’8”, 165lbs

SIGNED WITH SHARKS

2009-10 Stats: 36GP, 11G, 40A, 51Pts, 36PIM

James Marcou has attended the Islanders’ annual rookie camp for the past couple of years. He also grew up as an Islanders fan.

He’s physically small, but he’s not afraid to compete, and strives to prove everyone that told him he was too small to play wrong. He has good vision in the offensive zone and has the ability to rack up assists with passes that surprise the defending team and leave them scrambling in their own zone.

He might not be big, but he is strong. He could stand to get stronger, and improve his defensive game.

Center/Left Wing Jarod Palmer – Miami University (Ohio)
24-years-old, 6’0”, 201lbs

2009-10 Stats: 39GP, 17G, 27A, 44Pts, 38PIM

Palmer has been referred to as the most NHL-ready player available. And given his age and his size, it’s hard to argue with that. He has a dangerous shot, drives the puck through traffic and can unleash an accurate shot with very limited space. He is very strong in every aspect of the game, aggressive along the boards and is one of the best penalty killing forwards in the NCAA.

While his skating would be considered the weak point of his game, he has worked very hard at improving it and is much better than when he was draft eligible.

I've covered European free agents, and I've covered some free agent goaltenders. A lot of those goaltenders were from the NCAA, so I won't include them in this series. This is about free agents in the NCAA. It's listed in alphabetical order, not from best-to-worst.

Defenseman Lee Baldwin – University of Alaska-Anchorage
21-years-old, 6’4”, 203lbs

2009-10 Stats: 32GP, 1G, 9A, 10Pts, 51PIM

Baldwin is a physically large defenseman that is able to play in every situation. Smooth skater and often supports the forwards on the rush, making smart pinches in from the point when in the offensive zone. He is quite poised with the puck and makes safe decisions when pressured.

He isn’t as physical as someone that is 6’4” would be expected to be, but he still has the potential to add quite a bit of muscle to his frame. Physicality could come as he physically matures.

Right Wing Bobby Butler – University of New Hampshire
22-years-old, 6’0”, 181lbs

2009-10 Stats: 37GP, 27G, 23A, 50Pts, 20PIM

Butler is very responsible in his own end and has spent quite a bit of time playing in penalty kill situations with the University of New Hampshire. He has solid vision in the offensive zone and has the ability to create space for himself when he doesn’t have the puck, which results in him finding holes and being in the right place. This has definitely resulted in his impressive offensive production over his entire college career.

On the other hand, his skating isn’t fantastic and could work on improving there. Physically, he’s doesn’t stand out. Average size and average skating could hold him back.

Center Scott Campbell – University of Massacheusetts-Lowell
23-years-old, 6’2”, 209lbs

2009-10 Stats: 39GP, 16G, 18A, 34Pts, 20PIM

Campbell is solid all-around, but could stand to add some more muscle to his frame. He has decent skills everywhere, but he doesn’t really excel in any specific situation. Jack of all trades, master of none.

Forward Carter Camper – Miami University (Ohio)
21-years-old, 5’9”, 172lbs

2009-10 Stats: 39GP, 15G, 23A, 38Pts, 12PIM

Camper is undersized, but he is a phenomenal player. He’s a great skater and has enough strength and vision in the offensive zone to make an impact. He is equally adept at both scoring goals and setting up his teammates with beautiful passes.

Because of his size, he isn’t very physical or great defensively. But in the right system, he could be taught to use his speed and strip players of the puck in defensive situations.

And finally, it is the third part of three for free agent goaltenders. I’m just going to stop writing this introduction, and dive right in.

Chris Rawlings – Northeastern University
21-years-old, 6’5”, 209lbs

As a freshman goaltender with Northeastern, Rawlings has put forth a more-than-respectable campaign as their starter. In 31 games this season with Northeastern, he has put together a record of 15-14-2, with three shutouts in the process. A 2.83 GAA and .913 SV% isn’t too shabby either.

He uses his above-average size to his advantage by implementing a butterfly style of goaltending. At times, however, he goes down too early and has to scramble to make the save, which, once again, his size benefits. Like Stepanek, Rawlings is a raw goaltender (that is an unintentional pun), but has a fantastic set of skills currently, and combined with his size, could be molded into a fantastic goaltender.

Nevin Hamilton – University of Massachusetts Lowell
24-years-old, 6’2”, 209lbs

A senior at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Hamilton doesn’t look to be a starting goaltender, or, at the very least, wasn’t while he was in school. However, his size and his numbers over his college career could be attractive to a team with very little goaltending depth in their organization. His numbers, composed over 63 games in the NCAA are a record of 28-21-6, a GAA of 2.45 and a SV% of .911.

He could be a solid backup for a team in a couple of seasons. Whether or not a team will commit a couple of years to a 24-year-old to get a backup in return remains to be seen.

Now that we got through part one, and you’ve found out a little big about some free agent goaltenders, how about we move on to part two, so you can learn more about more free agent goaltenders?

Sounds like a plan to me!

Jakub Stepanek - HC Vitkovice
23-years-old, 6’0”, 159lbs

Stepanek is a goaltender that relies on his agility and reflexes to make saves. He plays a hybrid style between butterfly and whatever you want to call Hasek’s goaltending style.

He’s been the starter of HC Vitkovice since the 2008-09 season, playing 31 games that season and posting a 2.15GAA with a .937SV%. This season, he regressed slightly, posting 2.54GAA and a .921SV% in 34 games. His play in the 2008-09 postseason though was incredible, leading his team with a .944SV% and a stunning 1.85GAA in the 10 games he played.

He is very mobile and has great reflexes. Any team that is looking to sign him should work on him with his positioning, rebound control and the little things. He has a good skill set, and should be able to be groomed into a solid goaltender.

He was also the third goaltender for the Czech Republic at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Jussi Rynnäs – Ässät
Rynnäs only has one year of experience as a starting goaltender in a professional hockey league, and he didn’t disappoint, playing in 31 games, posting a 2.50GAA and a .929SV%, which were the best numbers of his entire career (including numbers in junior.

Like many young goaltenders that are physically big, Rynnäs hasn’t quite figured out how to move as well as he could, and sometimes looks like he is still developing coordination and agility. His mobility and overall performance did increase as the 2009-10 SM-Liiga progressed. He looks to be a late-bloomer.

The Dallas Stars have recently expressed an interest in acquiring Rynnäs.

Scott Greenham – University of Alaska-Fairbanks
22-years-old, 6’2”, 181lbs

Greenham really came out of nowhere this season. After playing 5 games in a backup role last season (behind Hobey Baker finalist Chad Johnson), he took over as the starter this season and didn’t look back.

He has great athleticism and the hockey sense to read the plays before they develop. He has the ability to get from side-to-side in the net to make big saves. Don’t expect rebounds either, as Greenham has worked with coach Dallas Ferguson on his puck management and control skills, which are greatly improved.

Most people were expecting a simple transition from the Nanooks from Johnson to Greenham, and it was, but Greenham won’t stop working to improve the technical parts of his game.

Zane Kalemba – Princeton/Norfolk (AHL)
24-years-old, 5’11”, 185lbs

Recently signed to a try-out contract with Norfolk, the former starting goaltender for Princeton had a rough season, with his numbers dropping to those similar to the ones that he put up in his freshman year.

Over the course of his time at Princeton, he posted a record of 57-44-5 in 108 games with a 2.46 goals-against average and.912 save percentage. He is currently the all-time leader in games played, save percentage, wins and shutouts for Princeton.

In the 2008-09 season, Kalemba as he went 22-10-1 with a 1.82 goals-against average and .932 save percentage and became the second Hobey Baker Award nominee in Princeton's school history.

He is a good all-around goaltender, with fantastic athletic ability, but needs confidence to play up to his ability.

While there wasn’t much response to my “Top European Free Agents” blog series, I had fun writing it up, so I decided that I would do another blog...

While there wasn’t much response to my “Top European Free Agents” blog series, I had fun writing it up, so I decided that I would do another blog series, except this time, it’s about free agent goaltenders in many different leagues. Although, six of the ten that will be discussed in this series are from the NCAA (well, sort of, one of them signed a try-out with Norfolk of the AHL recently).

To provide the readers with a little bit more of an idea of the goaltenders, I’ve added videos for goaltenders, when they’re available.

So without further ado, here’s my list of ten free agent goaltenders (again, in no particular order).

Cory Reichard – Miami University (Ohio)
23-years old, 5’11”, 165lbs

Using Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke’s wallet metaphor, Reichard could be a wallet filled with plenty of money for whichever team signs him. He was the starter for Miami University in the national championship game last season against Boston University. Sure, they lost, but Reichard has rebounded quite well.

He is one half of the NCAA’s best goaltending tandem, and has been a huge factor in Miami’s success this season. He has appeared in 22 games this season, posting a 17-2-3 record with 5 shutouts.

He’s calm under pressure and doesn’t get frustrated. He is excellent at using angles and rebound control to make up for his size.

Ben Scrivens – Cornell University
23-years-old, 6’2”, 192lbs

Scrivens has literally written his name in the record books at Cornell. In January of this year, he broke the Cornell career saves records, with 2,743 saves.

He’s played in 112 games, has a record of 61-36-13, and a GAA of 1.97 and a SV% of .926 over his four years with Cornell. These are simply phenomenal numbers for a college career. He was also recently named to the All-ECAC First Team and was one of two players that was unanimously selected to the All-Ivy League.

Scrivens has great agility and can get across his net with ease. His angles are quite good. He is one of the most consistent goaltenders in the NCAA, oozes confidence and has the rare ability to step up in big games. He has also shown the commitment necessary to improve his weaknesses, most notably his puck-handling.

Gustaf Wesslau - Djurgården
25-years-old, 6’4”, 194lbs

I had mentioned Wesslau in my European Free Agents blog series, but I feel that he deserves some mention here as well. He brings fantastic size to the crease, covering a ton of the net. As shown in the highlight, he has the ability to make an athletic save, and can do it at the right time (in this case, preserving the 1-0 shutout victory for his team). He’s also been quite steady over the past two seasons, with a GAA difference of 0.2 and a SV% difference of .003 between them. In both cases, the changes were improvements in his second season.

On the other hand, his rebound control isn’t the best, his puck handling is relatively weak and he’s only really been a starter in the Swedish Elite League for the past two seasons, so he’s fairly unproven.

Ilya Proskuryakov - Metallurg Magnitogorsk
23 years old, 5’11”, 176lbs

True, he doesn’t have great size, but the 23-year-old Proskuryakov is one of the top five goaltenders in the KHL. And most importantly? This season is the last on his contract, so he is free to make the move over to North America if a team gives him an offer and he accepts.

Last season, he became the starter of Metallurg Magnitogorsk, passing veteran Andrei Mezin. In the process, he played 40 games, compiling a record of 22-11-7, with a GAA of 2.35 and a SV% of .912. He took home the Aleksei Cherepanov Award, which is awarded to the best rookie, for his performance that season.

This season, he improved on his strong rookie season, playing in 32 games, posting a record of 19-8-4 with a GAA of 1.92 and a SV% of .927. For Metallurg Magnitogorsk and the KHL as a whole, it appears that Proskuryakov improved at the wrong time, since his contract is expiring and the NHL could provide him with the competition that he craves.

He also has a heck of a shot.

I have fallen behind on my posting over the past couple months and am sorry for any loyal readers out there.

What have you missed on the Turkish hockey scene? Well, I helped run a training camp for our Bosphorus team in the eastern city of Erzurum, the women's team took a few hard losses to the dominant Kocaeli team and lost its best player to pregnancy, and the Turkish Super League held its play-off tournament.

I will update with more detail on each topic soon.

In the meantime, I would like to share a link to another blog about playing hockey in Turkey from a Canadian goalie who played in the Super League this year. It's pretty amusing, so enjoy!
*D Tobias Viklund*

Again, continued from Part One and Two because of image restrictions.

D Tobias Viklund

While he isn't a big defenseman, Viklund plays an aggressive and intense game. He has a huge presence on the ice, plays a great two way game and has a good slap shot. Due to the quality of his skating, he will join the rush from time to time.

He doesn't quite have the hockey sense that other players mentioned here do, but he is a fine player.

LW Linus Klasen

Klasen, like Zuccarello Aasen, is undersized but an offensive dynamo. He is a player that is simple exciting to watch, he loves to go 1-on-1 with the defensmen and usually comes out on top.

He currently sits 7th in scoring in the Swedish Elite League, and leads Södertälje in scoring with 47 points in 47 games.

Honorable Mentions:
Roman Wick - Switzerland
Marcel Muller - Germany
Mathis Olimb - Switzerland

Continued from Part One due to image restrictions.

*LW Per Åslund*

Image: http://i870.photobucket.com/albums/ab261/vicegraphics/Blog/Perslund.png...

Continued from Part One due to image restrictions.

LW Per Åslund

The 23-year-old Per Åslund plays for Färjestad, who both Gustavsson and Brunnstrom played for before they were signed. Whether this helps him by increasing the amount of scouting remains to be seen. He's currently second in scoring for them.

He plays well in both the offensive and defensive zones. He has good hockey sense and can see the play develop sometimes.

G Gustaf Wesslau

The 25-year-old goaltender is the oldest player on this list, but is still fairly young in hockey years. He is a big goaltender, at 6'4", 195. He has fantastic side-to-side movement and covers a lot of the net due to his size and athleticism.

He is rarely rattled and plays well under pressure. He's not a stand-up goaltender or butterfly goaltender, but rather implements a hybrid goaltending style.

C Niklas Olausson

The 23-year-old isn't the fastest skater on the ice, but he makes up for it with his hockey sense. Since he has a lot of hockey sense, he is a very good playmaker that opens up the ice for his linemates and is especially valuable on the powerplay unit.

He sometimes takes shifts off, and his skating and defensive game need improvement, but his hockey sense and skills mean that he could potentially be a high-reward player.

He is probably the closest to a Fabian Brunnstrom type player.

D Juuso Hietanen

The 23-year-old is a skilled defenseman with a right handed shot. The Finn has great hockey sense, good mobility and good offensive skills. He's also good on the powerplay.

His defensive game is still inconsistent, but that should improve over time.

We've seen them for the past couple of years. Fabian Brunnstrom was heavily hyped before signing his contract with the Dallas Stars. Jonas Gustavsson...

We've seen them for the past couple of years. Fabian Brunnstrom was heavily hyped before signing his contract with the Dallas Stars. Jonas Gustavsson was similarly hyped before signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs last off-season.

The Red Wings thought that they had signed another one of these guys when they signed Ville Leino. After a season where Leino was largely ineffective, they sent him to Philadelphia.

And that's how the signings seem to work. Every year, teams select a player or two to target for signing and their fans hype them up until they're expecting them to be the savior of the franchise. This rarely happens, but there are some players that will probably be targeted heavily by NHL teams this off-season. These players are not in any sort of order.

C Roman Cervenka

The 24-year-old Czech player is just under average size for a NHL player, being 5'11" and 190 pounds, but has impressive offensive skills, as evidenced by leading the Czech Extraliga in scoring by almost 20 points, and is within 6 points from the league record. He is also over double the second leading scorer on his team.

Clearly he's a Czech offensive dynamo. As a playmaker, he's had to carry the load his team for the entire season and has the ability to make a breathtaking pass. While his offensive game is impressive, he lacks polish in his defensive game.

Recently, in an interview with a Czech newspaper, he has confirmed that he would like to go to the NHL after this season, also stating his desire to play in a Canadian hockey market. He also stated that there were five teams that were already interested and scouting him.

He will play for the Czech Republic at the 2010 Olympic Games.

RW Mats Zuccarello Aasen

I'm sure that some people are tired of hearing about him in my blog, so I won't discuss him too much. But really, his talent is that impressive. He is still top five in league scoring in the SEL, and is still leading the MoDo team in scoring, despite their signing of players like Peter Forsberg and Markus Naslund, and he's still small.

Red Wings European scout Hakan Andersson has given his approval of Aasen's game as well.

He will play for Norway at the 2010 Olympic Games.

The 21-year-old defenseman has good hockey sense. He has the ability to deliver great passes in the offensive zone and good passes that start the breakout. He has a good point shot and is a good powerplay quarterback. However, sometimes his offensive skills make him take unnecessary risks on the ice, and he's inconsistent defensively, but that should be able to be handled with quality coaching and experience.

He doesn't play the body constantly and he'll never be confused as a heavy hitter, but he does have good timing when lining up hits.

C Jonathan Granström

That's right. That's a picture of a fight. Granström plays the game unlike many Swedish players, he's hard-nosed, loves physical play, is a great checker and can contribute in the offensive zone.

He's an athletic player who can line up at any forward position. He likely won't be confused as an elite offensive player, but Granström does bring a lot more to the table than just offense.

The Istanbul Ice Eagles Girls team beat the Erzurum Polis team 8-1 Sunday.

Our star player again took control of the offense, scoring six goals. Our second leading scorer got one, and one player who I really wanted to see step up on offense got the other. The last mentioned has great speed and better than average puck control skills but has not yet developed a scoring instinct around the net.

No serious defensive lapses save for a break down in the first period resulting in a break away. I am afraid about when the team meets the Kocaeli team in the next match though. Apparently, they are very fast, and our defense looks pretty slow.

Our goalie faced very few shots, and the one goal resulted from a hard on-the-ice shot to the lower left hand corner of the net.

All in all it was a good game and everyone was excited afterward about the win. The team we played was not great but had a good goalie, and I was pretty happy about the number of shots we put on net.

We played at a rink in Izmit, which is about on hour east of Istanbul. The existing rink was under construction, so they had built a temporary facility under a tent next door, and man, was it cold in there! I certainly would have appreciated a space heater or two for the bench.

Apparently, the federation is redrafting the schedule because they will begin to use the new Istanbul rink. I do not know when our next game will be, but it will likely be against the Kocaeli team. When the time comes, I'll report how it goes.

I was only able to attend the first day of matches and really enjoyed them. The others I followed from the IIHF website.
