ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP)—Ten-time All-Star Teemu Selanne has decided to play another season with the Anaheim Ducks.

Selanne’s decision, announced by the Ducks on Saturday, came a day after defenseman Scott Niedermayer(notes), who turns 36 in August, told the team he’s coming back. Selanne turns 39 next week.

“Teemu is still playing at a high level, brings passion and energy to the locker room and is a loyal member of this franchise,” general manager Bob Murray said in a statement.

The Finnish-born Selanne has played 10 of his 17 NHL seasons with Anaheim and was signed for the 2009-2010 season.

He is the Ducks’ all-time scoring leader with 352 goals, including 59 game-winners, and 743 points. Anaheim was eliminated by Detroit in the second round of the playoffs this year.

“The way we played toward the end of last season, I’m excited about our chances,” Selanne said in the statement.

He and Niedermayer were key players in the Ducks’ run to the 2007 Stanley Cup championship. A team spokesman said the Ducks hope to sign Niedermayer to a new contract soon.

Anaheim traded defenseman Chris Pronger(notes) to the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday, along with prospect Ryan Dingle(notes) for forward Joffrey Lupul(notes), defenseman Luca Sbisa(notes), first-round picks in 2009 and 2010 and a conditional third-round pick in 2010 or 2011.

The 34-year-old Pronger had 11 goals and 37 assists in 82 games last season.

This sure solidifies their offensive lines with the chemistry that Selanne and Ebbett had formed towards the end of last year. The return of Lupul makes their top six very, very good.

Perry, Getzlaf, Ryan, Selanne, Ebbett and Lupul.

No they didn't. Niedermayer said he was coming back.

Niedermayer, Wisnewski, Whitney, Sbisa, Beauchemin (if he comes back) and Brookbank is still a good defensive core. If Beauchemin doesn't come back, I've heard rumblings that the Ducks take a run at Komisarek or Ohlund.

Factor in that Anaheim has four defensemen in their top five prospects going in Gardiner, Mitera, Salcido and Mikkelson and the Ducks will be fine without Pronger in both the short and long-term.

The Ducks offense was shut down at times during the Playoffs because they relied too heavily on one line. When that line wasn't going, they weren't winning games. Bringing in Lupul solidifies their second line as a legitimate threat.

HELSINKI (AP)—Anaheim forward Teemu Selanne(notes) says his next NHL season will be his last.

Selanne, a 10-time All-Star, celebrated his 39th birthday Friday. He told the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper in Finland that a man his age doesn’t belong in the NHL.

Selanne recently contemplated retirement but decided to play for one more season.

He also pondered the possibility of playing with longtime Montreal captain Saku Koivu. The Ducks are a possible new team for Koivu, who is leaving the Canadiens after 13 years.

The Finnish-born Selanne entered the NHL in 1992 at age 22 with the Winnipeg Jets. In his first season, he scored 76 goals to set a rookie record.

Selanne has 614 goals for Winnipeg, San Jose, Colorado and Anaheim.
