Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced today that the club has signed forward Mikael Johansson to a one-year, two-way contract for the 2009-2010 season. As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Johansson, 23, won the Swedish Elite League playoff championship after posting four points (one goal, three assists) in 11 playoff games with Farjestads BK Karlstad last season. In 2008-2009, the 5-foot-10, 181-pound centre led Farjestads BK Karlstad in assists with 28 and recorded a total of 34 points (six goals, 28 assists) in 49 regular season games. In 2007-2008, the native of Arvika, Sweden registered 39 points (15 goals, 24 assists) in 53 regular season contests with Farjestads BK Karlstad and finished second on the team with nine points (four goals, five assists) in 11 playoff games. Johansson was selected in the 9th round, 289th overall by the Detroit Red Wings at the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
